She had scraped together what previous generations of trans women could only dream of: a life of mundane, bourgeois comforts. The only thing missing was a child. But then her girlfriend, Amy, detransitioned and became Ames, and everything fell apart. Now Reese is caught in a self-destructive pattern: avoiding her loneliness by sleeping with married men.Ames isn't happy either. He thought detransitioning to live as a man would make life easier, but that decision cost him his relationship with Reese—and losing her meant losing his only family. Even though their romance is over, he longs to find a way back to her. When Ames's boss and lover, Katrina, reveals that she's pregnant with his baby—and that she's not sure whether she wants to keep it—Ames wonders if this is the chance he's been waiting for. Could the three of them form some kind of unconventional family—and raise the baby together? This provocative debut is about what happens at the emotional, messy, vulnerable corners of womanhood that platitudes and good intentions can't reach. Torrey Peters brilliantly and fearlessly navigates the most dangerous taboos around gender, sex, and relationships, gifting us a thrillingly original, witty, and deeply moving novel.

"Detransition, Baby is my second read by Torrey Peters, and I've enjoyed both books (the other one was Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones)! This book is funny, complicated, sad, and chaotic in a good way. The characters are well-rounded and unlikeable in the best way - they are messy, but I was rooting for them. I couldn't put the book down. Sometimes the tangents make it hard to keep track of things, but it worked out well enough. I'm not sure how I feel about the ending, but this was still such a good read. I'm looking forward to seeing what Torrey Peters does next!

CW - infertility, abuse, internalized transphobia, fetishization, attempted suicide, outing, cheating, miscarriage, grief, mentions of: HIV, suicide"
"Absolutely loved this book. It gave me insights into the trans community and some of the challenges they face. I absolutely loved Reese, Ames, and Katrina. I will admit that some parts were hard for me to read but the understanding I gained made those tough parts totally worth it. Highly recommend. "

"Like others, I am very grateful to have gained more insight into trans life and culture from this beautiful book. More so, this was a great story with complex characters that I would love to follow beyond this book. The writing itself is excellent, with very heavy/complex prose, I often had to read sentences several times to make sure I had grasped all of the information (not a complaint). *be wary of other comments providing inaccurate spoilers*"

"Horrible book! I was expecting to read a detranstion male to female back to male. But the book felt more about Reese, a transgender male to female. A lot of character swapping and time skipping was happening and was super confusing to read. Later in the book Ames and Reese became friends again in the story and Reese misgenders him continuously as she/her. When Reese, Ames and Katrina get into a polyamory relationship and Katrina is pregnant. Katrina has found out that Reese is sleeping with married man, and was sleeping with one with HIV and starts freaking out about it. Reese is upset about this as she sees it as no bid deal. Even though it is a chronic disease! Katrina no longer feels it is safe for the baby and aborts it."
