"⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This could be easily one of the most stupid critics of a book I’ve ever had. I’ve read and loved all of Ruta Sepety’s books and yet this one felt different. Although it is obviously historical fiction, it felt the most unrealistic out of her books with all the spy stuff. (I told you it was a dumb thing to make be upset by.)"
"Sobering YA historical fiction set in 1989 communist Romania, which is an often unrecognized part of history and something I knew very little about. This story is well written and will remind you not to take anything for granted. While not my favorite by this author, I am fascinated by everything she writes. This story is fiction, but Romanian’s history is not. "
"I love Ruta’s books. She is one of my favorite authors ever, I’ve read almost all her books and loved them dearly!
“I Must Betray You” is about Cristian and his dream to become a writer in Romania while a communist dictatorship is destroying every Romanian’s dreams. The characters are well developed, some are more lovable than others but that just brings out the realism of the stories within this masterpiece. Cristian and his family encountered very dark moments, tragedies, destruction and deaths. At the end some secrets come to light and Cristian is able to find answers to some of his most painful questions. Love historical fiction books that I can learn, do my own research and fall in love with new cultures and add new countries to visit and learn more about their histories. I think my last sentence is the reason why I love and enjoy Ruta Sepety’s books so much!
The author’s notes was the cherry on top, I love how involved Ruta is when it comes to her books and her researches and interviews are always so heartwarming."
"Damn. This book is truly amazing. The ending is just wow and left me with a haunting feeling. The author really knows how to take you on a story and then just blows you mind at the end, like she really had me questioning my intelligence. Lol. 9.4/10 really good. #haunting #shocking #historical_fiction "
