"The premise was the peak of this book which obviously is not a good thing. Yelena immediately had my attention. A girl sentenced to death becomes a poison taster. The feeling of helplessness was relentless but I wasn't complaining.... yet.
This was very slow and its downfall was that I was none the wiser after reading 400+ pages. We have a little character growth, too little world-building, and nothing else. It was as if all the interesting information was saved for book two. So like a clickbait situation. Not to say this didn't have potential it just never left the ground.
Even the characters while not surface level the information we received on them was. That made it impossible to connect. And there was also a lot of telling and not showing which made the dialog repetitive. In the end, I learned little of the story, and just all in all forgettable."
"Good book, lots of action in it. Valek is a bit dull and I thought could’ve used more personality but Ari and Janco are adorable! They remind me of Merlin and Arthur.
SPOILERS: Yelena’s magic reveal was also a bit anticlimactic and I thought could’ve been written better. But overall it’s a nice read. "
"im torn because i did really enjoy this but my expectations for it with through the roof so i was a little disappointed. maybe thats on me, but i had heard such good things about this book that i thought it would be a new favorite. the best thing about it was the characters and i LOVED the love interest. i wish the magic in this had more depth to it like i feel the fantasy elements were lacking. it seems like this might be explored more in the second book, but i don't know if that fully excuses it. also, i was very confused on how we are supposed to view the society she lives in like clearly it's an awful place to live but the MC says weirdly positive things about it even though they literally kill her people?? there was definitely some transphobia in this book that came out of nowhere like why did the author feel the need to make that a plot point yikes. i also feel like this book shouldn't be classified as YA with how much rape and torture is discussed. i mean i've read some dark stuff in YA before, but I don't think I'd be super comfortable recommending this to that audience."
"<strong>I was hooked</strong><br/><br/>I really enjoyed this story. It took me a little bit to become interested but once I did I couldn’t put it down. The first 10% was a bit boring to me but I understand it needs a solid start and it is a series so information overload is bound to happen. However, all of that stopped and the book became very interesting. I will say it does read like a VA so if you’re not into those then this isn’t for you. While the beginning was slow and it read like a VA it was still a great read. The characters were interesting and Yelena was strong but also soft. I couldn’t put the book down once it took off. The only part I didn’t like was the ending. It ended fine and it wasn’t a cliffhanger but it did end abruptly to me. With all the detail throughout the book the ending didn’t fit. I still enjoyed it I just wished for more detail at the end."

"Starting this right after the Healer series hindered my experience. Having the same narrator, the characters voices from the first series and the second series wasn’t distinguished. I couldn’t help but to constantly compare the characters and the plot. Hoping as I read on, I ‘forget’ the first group of characters and bond with these."
"I am reading and liking the Queens Assassin by Melissa De La Cruz. The sequel just came out so we-reading it before the second "

"I am getting really tired of reading books that are all about the rape and torture and violence committed against very young teenage women. And the love interest between the 33-year-old assassin/spy and 19-year-old rape victim slave is creepy as hell."
