*NOW A HULU ORIGINAL SERIES* *ONE of NPR’s and TIME’s BEST BOOKS of the YEAR * NAMED A MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK of the YEAR by WOMAN’S DAY, NEWSDAY, PUBLISHERS WEEKLY, BUSTLE, and BOOK RIOT!* “A book that sneaks up on you...I am hooked.” —Roxane Gay, New York Times bestselling author This acclaimed and “welcome debut from a seriously talented author” (New York Post) is a disarmingly honest, unapologetically black, and undeniably witty novel that will speak to those who have gone looking for love and found something very different in its place. Queenie Jenkins is a twenty-five-year-old Jamaican British woman living in London, straddling two cultures and slotting neatly into neither. She works at a national newspaper, where she’s constantly forced to compare herself to her white middle class peers. After a messy break up from her long-term white boyfriend, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places…including several hazardous men who do a good job of occupying brain space and a bad job of affirming self-worth. As Queenie careens from one questionable decision to another, she finds herself wondering, “What are you doing? Why are you doing it? Who do you want to be?”—all of the questions today’s woman must face in a world trying to answer them for her. “A must-read novel about sex, selfhood, and the best friendships that get us through it all” (Candace Bushnell, New York Times bestselling author), Queenie is a remarkably relatable exploration of what it means to be a modern woman searching for meaning in today’s world.

"Queenie was funny, she was smart, and she was deeply flawed and I loved that. Candice did a great job of depicting what life is like for Black women and how it often feels like we have the weight of the world on our shoulders but the only choice we have is to grin and bear it until we can’t take it anymore. Her story was raw and real. I loved the family members and her friends that were such an integral part of her life and healing. The mental health aspect and therapy was amazing. Kyazike was probably my favorite but Maggie was also hilarious. I listened to this as an audiobook and loved how the narrator told the story. 4.5 ⭐️’s for the audiobook. "
"I didn't expect this book to go down the road it went but I was pleasantly surprised throughout the book. The struggles of adulthood and mental illness was brought to awareness and made me want to read more. I was shocked to find out his was Carty-Williams debut novel. Very well done!"
"I really liked this one. A black female lead? Yes! Discussions on mental health as POC? Loved it! Relatable and familiar situations? Lived for it! I only wish they really went more in-depth about certain issues like race; the author brings up a lot of issues but doesn’t really take the time to speak on them. I felt like I was left hanging on that behalf. Also, I love the beautiful cover art. "

"Man this girl went through some real tough times... let’s list a few things here shall we?
1. She miscarries and doesn’t know till she gets to the clinic
2. Her boyfriend asks for a “break” which unfortunately for her is a break up. But she realizes this too late
3. Since she was sharing an apartment with her boyfriend, after he asks for a “break”... she has to move out and look for a place to stay. She finds a place but then....
4.She looses her job at some point and has to move into her grandparents house- which by the way is a pain for a bit
The list goes on; but one thing though; she does have supportive friends... at least that’s what I thought until......
Go read this book 😁"
