Stephen King
“An impressive work of mythic magnitude that may turn out to be Stephen King’s greatest literary achievement” (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution), The Gunslinger is the first volume in the epic Dark Tower Series.A #1 national bestseller, The Gunslinger introduces readers to one of Stephen King’s most powerful creations, Roland of Gilead: The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which mirrors our own in frightening ways, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake. Inspired in part by the Robert Browning narrative poem, “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came,” The Gunslinger is “a compelling whirlpool of a story that draws one irretrievable to its center” (Milwaukee Sentinel). It is “brilliant and fresh…and will leave you panting for more” (Booklist).

"I only give this a thumbs up, because there is no meh choice. Knowing it’s the beginning of a larger story I won’t be too critical. This book lacked excitement. I had to re-read the last chapter because I felt as if I had missed something. The good part is, like most King stories you can easily imagine yourself in his creative environments. I do like that. It has great detail and pulls you in. It just felt slow, and much like the Gunslinger himself you were just dragging your feet in the dessert sand, and not really getting anywhere. But, that’s how some journeys are. It takes time. "
"So.... I'm a big Stephen King fan from the beginning, but for some reason, I never read The Dark Tower series. I was talking to another fan a month or so ago who couldnt rave enough about the series, so I decided to go for it, one book after another. I just finished the final book today. Wow! What an amazing journey its been. I'm so glad I read it the way I did because the series reads like one HUGE book. There were times when things got confusing in the tale but I tend to skim so I made myself go back, slow down and really get into the characters. It really is an epic novel full of heroes, monsters, magic, romance and cute little animals. I highly recommend it. Ya gotta love the man's brain! Way to go Stephen! "
"Kinda the gateway book of the series (no duh, it’s the first one!) but if you’ve read the series you’ll know what I mean. It’s the book that sets the scene for the rest of the books, so you may feel like you were in a car accident after you finish it, thinking “what just happened?!?”. But trust me, keep going to the next book!"
"It was the beginning of the best epic I’ve ever read."
