“This funny and fresh take on a classic tale manages to comment on gender roles, racial disparities, and white privilege all while creeping me all the way out. So good.”—Zakiya Dalila Harris, author of The Other Black GirlSteel Magnolias meets Dracula in this New York Times best-selling horror novel about a women's book club that must do battle with a mysterious newcomer to their small Southern town.Bonus features: • Reading group guide for book clubs • Hand-drawn map of Mt. Pleasant • Annotated true-crime reading list by Grady Hendrix • And more! Patricia Campbell’s life has never felt smaller. Her husband is a workaholic, her teenage kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she’s always a step behind on her endless to-do list. The only thing keeping her sane is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime. At these meetings they’re as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are about their own families. One evening after book club, Patricia is viciously attacked by an elderly neighbor, bringing the neighbor's handsome nephew, James Harris, into her life. James is well traveled and well read, and he makes Patricia feel things she hasn’t felt in years. But when children on the other side of town go missing, their deaths written off by local police, Patricia has reason to believe James Harris is more of a Bundy than a Brad Pitt. The real problem? James is a monster of a different kind—and Patricia has already invited him in. Little by little, James will insinuate himself into Patricia’s life and try to take everything she took for granted—including the book club—but she won’t surrender without a fight in this blood-soaked tale of neighborly kindness gone wrong.

"Another great book by Grady Hendrix. This isn't another "sexy" vampire tale. This is a little darker, but as always Grady makes it more than just another dark tale. Highly recommend anything by this author. "

"Not at all what I expected….southern housewife Patricia knows nothing else outside of being a proper wife and mother. Patricia joins a book club with some of the other proper ladies in her neighborhood reading improper books of murder and mayhem that brings excitement to the woman. Patricia’s enthusiasm progresses when the mysterious , kind, and handsome James Harris moves next door. As disappearances arise in her town, Patricia finds the real mystery outside her book club pointing to non-other-than the venerated James Harris. "

"This was a great book! Very unique plot, such seems to be the case with all his books, but I have yet to read them. Will be reading My Best Friends Exorcism soon which takes place in the same neighborhood I believe. This was funny, but also a mystery. I was interested the whole time. Liked the characters and that it mostly took place in the 90s. I highly recommend!"

"Thriller/horror isn’t normally my genre, but this one is that and a lot more. At turns horrifying, suspenseful, hilarious and maddening, the women of the Southern Book Club encounter a less-than-savory character 🧛♂️ who infiltrates their community, and he will test their mettle. The storyline hits on parenting and marital issues, racism and sexism - all well-done. Recommend, with the caveat that there are several graphic, disturbing scenes 😱🫣🤢."

"Not bad, was hoping for a different ending and something different for the bad guy."

"Very fun book with endearing characters. I like that it was not only a supernatural vampire story, but also a story of the very real crappy things that women faced - stereotypes, misogyny, and annoying men who can't admit they're wrong. I'm glad it had a realistic story and ending."

"It was good but definitely not my favorite by Grady. The only thing that really kept my attention were the characters."
