Terry Pratchett
A paperback edition with the original cover art of the classic fantasy novel by Terry Pratchett, the fifth book in the Witches series, part of the Discworld novels. 'A master storyteller' A. S. Byatt 'An excellent mystery whodunnit...Terry Pratchett at his very best - wonderful humour combined with a really good read' 5-star reader review 'There's a kind of magic in masks. Masks conceal one face, but they reveal another. The one that only comes out in darkness . . .' The Opera House in Ankh-Morpork is home to music, theatrics and a harmless masked Ghost who lurks behind the scenes. But now, a set of mysterious backstage murders may just stop the show. Agnes Nitt has left her rural home of Lancre in the hopes of launching a successful singing career in the big city. The only problem is, she doesn't quite look the part. And there are two witches who would much rather she return home to join their coven. Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg have travelled to Ankh-Morpork to convince Agnes that life as a witch is much better than one on the stage. Only now they're caught up in a murder mystery featuring masks and maniacal laughter. And the show MUST go on . . . Maskerade is the fifth book in the Witches series, but you can read the Discworld novels in any order. Praise for the Discworld series- ' Pratchett's spectacular inventiveness makes the Discworld series one of the perennial joys of modern fiction' Mail on Sunday 'Pratchett is a master storyteller' Guardian 'One of our greatest fantasists, and beyond a doubt the funniest' George R.R. Martin 'One of those rare writers who appeals to everyone' Daily Express 'One of the most consistently funny writers around' Ben Aaronovitch 'Masterful and brilliant' Fantasy & Science Fiction 'Pratchett uses his other world to hold up a distorting mirror to our own... he is a satirist of enormous talent ... incredibly funny ... compulsively readable' The Times 'The best humorous English author since P.G. Wodehouse' The Sunday Telegraph 'Nothing short of magical' Chicago Tribune 'Consistently funny, consistently clever and consistently surprising in its twists and turns' SFX ' Discworld is compulsively readable, fantastically inventive, surprisingly serious exploration in story form of just about any aspect of our world...There's never been anything quite like it' Evening Standard

"Maskerade by Terry Pratchett
3/5 ⭐⭐⭐
This one felt like a building book. The pair Ogg and Weatherwax looking for a third witch. Ogg being her pleasant self unless she's stuck under Weatherwax's thumb and Weatherwax acting and being the superior witch the whole time with Greebo in tow.
The Phantom of the Opera bit was okay and I look forward to Nitt's progress in the next book. I was sad for her though, such blatant disregard for a person is so rude. "

"Good fun, but also seriously creepy. Phantom of the Opera with a dippy, self absorbed Christine who faints histrionically on cue but can't sing a note, dubbed by "Perdita" (nee Agnes), a sensible country girl with a powerful voice, always referred to as "the one with the great personality. And lovely hair. ". Some great lines:<br/><br/>(looking at the chandelier) - "Now THAT's an accident waiting to happen"<br/><br/>Crowd hating down the Phantom: <br/>" Have we got the flaming torches?"<br/>"Torches are not required!"<br/>"What about pitchforks, eh?"<br/>"That's for a vampire you idiot!""

"This is really good Discworld. The Witches always are. I immediately ordered the following book. Trying to think of stand out parts here, but it's been a while. Greebo as a man, again, is a big highlight. Oh god, a book Nanny Ogg wrote that gets some attention. It's just so witty. Thank you, Mr Pratchett! <3 <3"
