"This is such a lovely standalone! I can't call it a horror book because it is told by someone who is not scared of shadows or ghouls. If anything this is an adventure of discovery and the bonds or curses that can span across generations!"

"This was a quick read. I like VE Schwab and I feel as if all her stuff is different. It is a stand alone book that has a bit of creepiness and mystery. Overall I liked it. I liked that there was no love story and that the "ghouls" were somewhat creepy but weren't bad. They were just a part of living and dying. "

"This is basically Coraline mixed with A Haunting of Hill House. I think I would have liked this more if I read it with my Halloween horror reads. It was kinda a huge downer and not exactly what I was mentally prepared for. 3.5 rounded up because I love a good ghoul."

"I loved the imagery that V. E Schwab creates with their writing but I felt like the ending just fell flat and I would have liked even more backstory on her parents and maybe even previous Priors. There's also a huge comparison to be made between this book and Coraline. A very quick read and I definitely will be reading other things by this author! "

"This is a beautiful, a little spooky, sad story. I've never read V. Schwab books before, so it was a pleasure to discover her writing style: it's very poetic. I liked the way she portrayed the main character; it's not often I see fantasy heroines like her, and, although I prefer my books to have at least some romance, I wasn't upset there was none in Gallant. The only thing I'm a little upset about - or just sad, perhaps - is the ending. It feels very bittersweet to me. I wanted the story to have at least some hope in it, but there's none, not in my understanding, at least. This is a beautiful story, but be prepared for sadness that comes with it."

"Another book down, this one is kind of hard to explain but basically this book is about an orphan. All she has is a journal of her mother and then she receives a letter telling her to "come home" to Gallant where she finds out she's not as alone as she thought. I think this book is amazing, it was a pretty quick read for me because I couldn't wait to see where the story went. It includes demons, secrets, ghouls/ ghosts. It's not a horror I think but it does have things that go "bump in the night". I definitely recommend this book to anyone that finds secrets, a lost past, an alternate world, and ghosts interesting"
