Shield of Sparrows (Deluxe Limited Edition) - Likewise Book Reviews
"One chapter into this book, and I knew I was going to be mad and madly in love. Mad because it came out 4 days ago and spoiler alert, it's not a standalone. The world building was absolutely lovely. No wonder it was already picked up by a production company because I could practically see it playing out in my head. Odessa was very relatable. Why? Because she had flaws. She wasn't the strongest or brightest, but she worked hard and had good character. Also, her incessant questions were hilarious. Curiosity got her into a lot of trouble, which just meant more fun for me.
This was such a slowburn, but boy, was it worth it. I ached for her to be able to feel another human being. Odessa constantly felt like she didn't belong, and we became companions in that. The twist and turns were bitter sweet. Oh, and the love interest, words can't even express. There were brief touches I longed for, confusion, and heartache. Also, plenty of steam. I couldn't get enough, and it couldn't come fast enough either. I read this 600+ page book in two days, ya'll. And I reeled over it afterward for even longer. When I say I lost sleep and brain cells over this story, it was in the most delicious way possible.
I can not even begin to believe this is a debut fantasy. I definitely want to read more of Devney Perry's work. The side characters were wonderful as well. Evie, that cute little hellion stole my heart. I actually enjoyed the portrayal of Mae, Odessa's sister. It was such a breath of fresh air. Normally, authors write characters as good or bad with no grey area. Mae was definitely a grey area, but that makes it all the more real. She was a spoiled murderous brat, but she loved Odessa.
There were so many questions and emotions going through this story I was beyond impressed. I have to mention the world building again because for over 600 pages I was living in it and now I miss the feeling. Every element, every monster, every emotion was just perfect and well thought out. "
"Really stood start to the series! There was some “sampling” from GoT. The kingdoms were all preparing for the Crux migration (giant birds) where they all hide underground while the birds fed on everything apparently (The Long Night), while the kings were being sneaky behind each other’s backs. For a good portion of the book, I thought the FMC and MMC were half siblings & every time a question might get answered, someone would interrupt! Thank my lucky stars, there was no incest. Just more questions.

SPOILERS FOR MY MEMORY*************
Ransom told Odessa to take Eve and run. He confronted the Crux by himself. Des runs to the dungeon, the priest is there waiting for her. She and Eve leave with him. Later, we get Ransom’s POV: Holston lost a leg, Xavier lived but barely. The king fled with his legion. The crux ransom was fighting and killed turned into a woman with red curly hair like Odessa. That’s how it ended."
"This book is fantastic, intricately written with perfect pacing. Just as you start to grasp what’s happening, you feel like there isn’t enough book left to reveal it all. The world-building is incredible, and the characters are rich and fully developed, each with their own stories and lives."
