Octavia E. Butler
As the acclaimed Patternist science fiction series begins, two immortals meet in the long-ago past—and mankind’s destiny is changed forever. For a thousand years, Doro has cultivated a small African village, carefully breeding its people in search of seemingly unattainable perfection. He survives through the centuries by stealing the bodies of others, a technique he has so thoroughly mastered that nothing on Earth can kill him. But when a gang of New World slavers destroys his village, ruining his grand experiment, Doro is forced to go west and begin anew. He meets Anyanwu, a centuries-old woman whose means of immortality are as kind as his are cruel. She is a shapeshifter, capable of healing with a kiss, and she recognizes Doro as a tyrant. Though many humans have tried to kill them, these two demi-gods have never before met a rival. Now they begin a struggle that will last centuries and permanently alter the nature of humanity. Hugo and Nebula award–winning author Octavia E. Butler’s sweeping cross-century epic places her “among the best of contemporary SF writers” (Houston Chronicle). This ebook features an illustrated biography of Octavia E. Butler including rare images from the author’s estate.

"This book... I couldn't put it down. She has such a way of pulling you into her world and simultaneously making you view that world from completely different perspectives so you feel as if you know, understand, and are moving through it with her. A MUST-READ "

"Not sure if my response showed from before. I have a very silly phone and acts extra silly when I open this app up. Anyways, I loved it all and although its been awhile I can tell you which part but can say the character I related to even though they were out of this world for me at the time and my first sci fi book. It took me a while to read but when i did always a pleasure and it was found at a used book store and always wanted to get the next book never did."

"This book made me CRY. This book touched on so many great themes like racism, colonialism, toxic relationships, eugenics, etc. Incredibly endearing premise: the courtship of two immortals over the course of 300 years.

The scene where Thomas died in front of Ayanwu was incredibly cinematic, had my eyes glued to the paged for its entirety; perfectly imagining what was happening. It had me bawling. The battle between Anyanwu and Joseph was perfectly written. Doro bringing Joseph to Ayanwus plantation just really demonstrated how he destroys everything he comes in contact with. It's one of the best fight scenes I've ever read. Octavia really knew how to make a conflict HIT. There's so much more that's great about the book. I was hooked start to finish, although there are some slow parts of the book. ALSO, this book breaks so many taboos: there's incest and dolphin sex. 5/5. I will immediately read the second installment of the patternist series. I love Octavia E. Butler, she's a genius"
