d happen in this book, where writing turns out to be super important.

There was a lot of story within the story which slowed it down a bit but ultimately helped to complete the story. I don't know how she would have learned about herself without the aid of dad's journal but I do love a story where the dad didn't leave, die or disappear but instead, keeps coming back as he does at the start and we learn how this dysfunctional family has managed for years under a surprising level of oppression both overt and secretive.

Pairing this with another series about going through secret doors has also proven complimentary. I love reading this amidst the Wayward Children series even though it stands apart and is by a different author. Similar great minds think alike?

Anyway, love Sinbad the dog and Samuel and could easily see another amazing adventure book that follows Jane. January is also a fantastic main character in a weird in-between space of being richly spoiled but seen as trouble because she's darker skinned, eager to adventure but largely untested, fighting authority to find her voice. Lots to love, just a little slow paced to get her to a point of realizing some things but ultimately worth it.

32:T652,This is going to sound odd, but I feel like you read this for the experience rather than the story. Not to sound bougie, but I recently visited Maui and we did the iconic “Road to Hana,” which is this long winding journey to a tiny town on the west coast of the island. And the town of Hana is absolutely not the reason you go; other than the fact it’s overlooking the ocean in the most beautiful state, it’s your classic beachside town.

But the journey! It’s gorgeous waterfalls, misty rainforests, and cliff side views that you can spend hours admiring. And that is exactly how I felt about the book; the writing was gorgeous, and it meandered around Doors like windy roads. But the story didn’t hold me.
