Jennette McCurdy
A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life. Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants. Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.

"This is absolutely not the kind of book I'd normally go for, I like to stick to fiction and horror. This is, in some ways, a horror novel. There are some horrendous personal stories in here I would never be able to share with anyone. I felt somewhat obligated to read this as I've liked a lot of what Jeanette McCurdy has done in her youth, and hearing what she went, and is, going through is heartbreaking. If you want to be a little more sad, and see some of the true horrors of the world, give this book a read.
Props to you Jeanette, I hope life treats you better."

"I am glad Jeanette quit acting and started writing. She was very straight to the point in this book, I can see her writing other books in the future giving a lot of control of what emotion she wants to put out. I really enjoyed her voicing the characters of her life. her grandma is probably livid after she wrote this book lol"

"Wow. This was a lot, and to think I'm just the reader and yet I felt the pain. I loved watching ICARLY growing up, to this day I still watch it, its amazing how Jennette was able to hide everything on screen. Yes that was her job, to act, to play a role, to act like everything is fine but yet reading what happened during that time hurts. The things she went through, the emotional torment, the manipulations, the physical trauma is horrible and it all just came down to her wanting to please her mom. I'm not giving out my pity or anything since reading this I can tell Jennette doesn't want that, but...dang if it doesn't want me to say "I'm sorry you went through this". You know that saying "Some parents don't deserve children" well I'd say "Some children don't deserve parents that treat them horribly". I'm glad Jennette has finally come terms with everything, even though it still a huge struggle, she's doing okay now. I hope she continues doing what's best for her. Great read!"

"This book was a tough read! It’s always things like this that remind me that everyone has their own struggles and not everything is as perfect as they seem on the outside. This book touched on tough subjects with humor like eating disorders and mental abuse while also keeping the integrity of the story. I’m not typically an autobiography reader but this was so good i can’t believe it took me so long to read it"

"This was such a great memoir. It’s so sad to see what one of my favorite actresses went through to be on a show I absolutely loved. I was jealous of kid actors, I wanted their life. Little did I know all the pain these actors went through just to bring joy and amusement to others. The onset behind the scenes bullying Jeanette went through from adult staff to how her mother raised her is just shocking. This world is just so cruel. Beautiful telling of a true life story. "

"This book was so well written and made me really think about things. Jennette was someone I watched when I was a kid and it is so sad knowing what she went through not just after or before, but during the shows when she's seemingly happy on screen. It makes me think twice before assuming someone is happy when they might just be really good at hiding behind their smile."

"I liked this book, and I loved how she told her story. I love how she didn’t hold back and told everything. I liked how she brought in some comedy into it as well. I hate what happened to her but I’m also so happy she’s better and happy🩷"

"I’m not much for nonfiction or memoirs, but I’m glad I chose the audiobook through BOTM. The fact that Jennette was the narrator made it hit that much harder. "
