From the national bestselling author of Alice comes a familiar story with a dark hook—a tale about Peter Pan and the friend who became his nemesis, a nemesis who may not be the blackhearted villain Peter says he is…There is one version of my story that everyone knows. And then there is the truth. This is how it happened. How I went from being Peter Pan’s first—and favorite—lost boy to his greatest enemy. Peter brought me to his island because there were no rules and no grownups to make us mind. He brought boys from the Other Place to join in the fun, but Peter's idea of fun is sharper than a pirate’s sword. Because it’s never been all fun and games on the island. Our neighbors are pirates and monsters. Our toys are knife and stick and rock—the kinds of playthings that bite.Peter promised we would all be young and happy forever. Peter lies.

"This is kind of another Peter Pan retelling. This story takes place BEFORE the time of Wendy Darling. This explains Peters first set of Lost Boys and how Peter and Hook became enemies. It was very interesting to see the turn the book takes. Because of the story we only know the ending, but not the why. So knowing from the original story that Hook was obsessed with Peter Pan, it’s like “why does this grown man care so much?,” this story took that and ran with it. It tells the entire story as if you’re Jamie (Captain Hook) growing to hate Peter Pan. This book does include a lot of gruesome things in its story telling but it made me yet again see the story through different eyes.
It proves that the hero isn’t always the hero and the magic isn’t always what you think it to be. I found myself feeling more for Captain Hook and the lost boys that exist in the story. It’s also clear that Peter is a BRAT.
The book had a very slow beginning so although it’s short, it took me a while to get through it. Once I got half way, the book really sped up and made me want to finish it. If you like the story of Peter Pan, this will definitely have you rethinking your desire to explore Neverland. "
"Wow I just got blindsided by the end of this story. Honestly it started out so slowly I began to think I wouldn't like it, then when the story picked up the momentum kept going.

Looking back now I feel a little dumb I couldn't guess the ended but I'm glad I didn't because my flippin jaw dropped lol.

Also I felt there was a little more potential for the book to be a 5 star rating. There wasn't many adventures or world building which would have added nicely. You did get to see the characters change and grow which was one of my favorite parts especially when in this world it is a death sentence.

I very much enjoyed how sinister Peter was displayed because if you think about it he never was a good person (in the stories and movie) and never seemed to care what anyone else wanted.

The Author Christina Henry has come up with amazing creepy retellings I hope she keeps going really enjoyed the ones I've read so far."
"I’m only about halfway through, but I love the way the writing style mimics that of the original tale! The characters have depth that is so rare. Lord of the flies vibes"
