Kristin Hannah
A #1 bestseller on The New York Times, USA Today, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times! From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah's The Women—at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is over-whelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war, she meets—and becomes one of—the lucky, the brave, the broken, and the lost. But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam. The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.

"Wow. Just wow. Kristin Hannah masterfully brings us into the 1960s and 1970s as the United States goes to war in Vietnam. Her lead character, Frances (Frankie) McGrath, is vibrant and fully drawn. A nurse, she enlists in the Army and goes to Vietnam after her brother dies in-country. Two years later, after seeing thousands of men maimed and killed, she returns home to Southern California. Vietnam cannot let go of her, however: Frankie’s post-Vietnam life is tumultuous and risky; she is a loose cannon, in pain, addictive, suffering from trauma now called PTSD. This is a wonderful story, rich characters. Kristin Hannah does what she does extremely well: She turns her women characters inside out, and we feel every tear, hope, anger, slight, heartbeat. As readers, we learn about nurses in the Vietnam War and the difficulties they faced both in-country and when they returned. A gift of respect to women and men who served or fought in the Vietnam War."

"This book is so well written and I highly recommend the audible version. The narrator was excellent in her ability to adapt her voice and emotion to the character and Kristin Hannah writes with such depth and colorful descriptions that at times I felt like I was watching it all happen. Given it was the 60’s/70’s, I presumed discrimination and lack of recognition of women, but couldn’t have presumed the deep impact to these ladies who served. Wow! I’m sure many made great progress because women are so strong and created avenues for other women to get the mental and emotional support they deserved. Too bad it took so long for all who served in Vietnam to be recognized. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. "
"Amazing look at the real struggles our Vietnam Vets went/go through. The reality of it is heartbreaking. And important to read about, understand, and know. I would love to see this as a movie. An emotional roller coaster ride (and worth every bit of it!). And yes, it’s as good as everyone says it is. "

"I don’t know how Kristin does every single time? The Women is a historical fiction book in which the main character (Frankie) is a nurse serving as a nurse in the Army during the war in Vietnam.
Now, this is where things got interesting for me. I am a lover of historical fiction but all the books I’ve read before are either WWI or WWII. For this book specifically I was looking forward to learning about the Vietnam war. This book was a little longer than I am used to, but every page where I got to learn the struggles and danger Frankie experienced got me turning pages nonstop.
This book has it all, I mean it's a lengthy book, the first half its her life in serving during the war, and the second half is her life after she comes back from the war. Her life was very easy to identify with, that is why I love Kristin books so much, she creates characters for us readers that are so easy to understand.
If you are a historical fiction reader I can promise you, this book will make your soul very happy! The ending is simply more than what you can expect!"
