It's late summer 1793, and the streets of Philadelphia are abuzz with mosquitoes and rumors of fever. Down near the docks, many have taken ill, and the fatalities are mounting. Now they include Polly, the serving girl at the Cook Coffeehouse. But fourteen-year-old Mattie Cook doesn't get a moment to mourn the passing of her childhood playmate. New customers have overrun her family's coffee shop, located far from the mosquito-infested river, and Mattie's concerns of fever are all but overshadowed by dreams of growing her family's small business into a thriving enterprise. But when the fever begins to strike closer to home, Mattie's struggle to build a new life must give way to a new fight-the fight to stay alive.

"Quick easy read. Written for middle school aged kids but was interesting and kept me entertained. Especially where I didn’t want to start a big book yet but still wanted to keep me occupied. "

"This YA book is well-told. I loved the story. Though it is fiction, it goes along with real events and real people. Be sure to read the facts after the end of the book. "

"This was a great read especially during this time of COVID19. The conditions of being quarentined are different but the quickness of the virus spread and knowing little of the virus are similar. Thank God for modern medicine and our grocery stores still being stocked despite having to hunt for toilet paper.

I enjoyed reading about the history of Philadelphia at the end of this book in the acknowledgement. I don't usually read the acknowledgement but I was very interested in where the author got her information from. Although I wish I read this before visiting the historical city of Philadelphia last year but this year with the break out of COVID19 is equally just as fitting.

I've never really cried during a book. I tend to stray away from hard hitting books because I don't like crying. However, this definitely made me tear up once or twice and made me emotionally invested into Matilda's struggles with her family and friends."
