It's late summer 1793, and the streets of Philadelphia are abuzz with mosquitoes and rumors of fever. Down near the docks, many have taken ill, and the fatalities are mounting. Now they include Polly, the serving girl at the Cook Coffeehouse. But fourteen-year-old Mattie Cook doesn't get a moment to mourn the passing of her childhood playmate. New customers have overrun her family's coffee shop, located far from the mosquito-infested river, and Mattie's concerns of fever are all but overshadowed by dreams of growing her family's small business into a thriving enterprise. But when the fever begins to strike closer to home, Mattie's struggle to build a new life must give way to a new fight-the fight to stay alive.

"This YA book is well-told. I loved the story. Though it is fiction, it goes along with real events and real people. Be sure to read the facts after the end of the book. "

"I absolutely remember when this book came out, especially the cover, which is very distinctive. I think it scared me off to be honest (I had a thing when I was younger about scary covers) but otherwise this was definitely a book I would have enjoyed. It’s certainly heavy subject matter, but the author handles it extremely well considering the age group this is intended for. The history itself is tragic, but important to acknowledge. I just visited Philadelphia, which is why I picked this up in the first place, and I enjoyed the brief historical overview of the Yellow Fever Epidemic."
