From #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson, the Mistborn series is a heist story of political intrigue and magical, martial-arts action.Three hundred years after the events of the Mistborn trilogy, Scadrial is now on the verge of modernity, with railroads to supplement the canals, electric lighting in the streets and the homes of the wealthy, and the first steel-framed skyscrapers racing for the clouds. The Bands of Mourning are the mythical metal minds owned by the Lord Ruler, said to grant anyone who wears them the powers that the Lord Ruler had at his command. Hardly anyone thinks they really exist. A kandra researcher has returned to Elendel with images that seem to depict the Bands, as well as writings in a language that no one can read. Waxillium Ladrian is recruited to travel south to the city of New Seran to investigate. Along the way he discovers hints that point to the true goals of his uncle Edwarn and the shadowy organization known as The Set.Other Tor books by Brandon SandersonThe CosmereThe Stormlight ArchiveThe Way of KingsWords of RadianceEdgedancer (Novella)Oathbringer The Mistborn trilogyMistborn: The Final EmpireThe Well of AscensionThe Hero of AgesMistborn: The Wax and Wayne seriesAlloy of LawShadows of SelfBands of MourningCollectionArcanum UnboundedOther Cosmere novelsElantrisWarbreakerThe Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians seriesAlcatraz vs. the Evil LibrariansThe Scrivener's BonesThe Knights of CrystalliaThe Shattered LensThe Dark TalentThe Rithmatist seriesThe RithmatistOther books by Brandon SandersonThe ReckonersSteelheartFirefightCalamity

"When it comes to the Mistborn books, Sanderson tends to get a little caught up in the epic at the cost of the actual narrative, and this was definitely the case here.

I didn't know there would be a fourth book until the end of this one but it explains why this read like an installment rather than a complete and compelling work by itself. The larger story gets convoluted without a lot of payoff, and it's not surprising that a novella crops up between this and the next episode, because I really have no idea what is going on.

If this were the end of the story, it would be quite flat, though I appreciated that Sanderson's penchant for deep existential and cultural issues started to shine through in some of the final scenes.

In conclusion, it was disappointing, but I'll reserve final judgment for the series as a whole ... for a little while."
"Reread update: I forgot a whole lot of what happened in this book and the implications for the future of the cosmere. Now I am dearly looking forward to the last book in this series.

Original review:

As always, this book is on par completely. If there was something above par it would be that. But I don't know what that'd be called, so it's 'on par plus' I'll say. The point is, it's great. Detailed, but not so much that you get lost; the characters are evolving nicely and I've grown to love them; the story makes you want to read so much more as you wonder about the Bands, and well everything, which I won't spoil. But it does leave you with lots of questions and intrigue!

Two things I want to say about this book/Sanderson in general.

This was probably one of the more complex books in terms of the magic system and how everything is now interweaving with one another but rather than the complexity and amazing detail take away from the novel, it just makes it more interesting and so very real.

Secondly, while it takes a great deal of work to have a long series of books with cleverly planned foreshadowing and connections, it takes a great deal more to have multiple long series and have them all be related and interwoven together through Sanderson's Cosmere. This book is the beginnings of that and just I just know everything from here on out is going to completely blow me out of the water in terms of the greater Cosmere.

There's always another secret."
