"I will say this: it was staggering to read this book while driving through the Sierra Mountains. To see first hand the terrain the women in the story experienced, and to know they did it with covered wagons? It’s humbling and brought this story even closer to home for me.

I am very privileged to have been able to fly and drive to a location that 100 years ago was traversed by courageous men and women on foot. The cities I visited were founded on the backs of those who where brave enough to go west, and I can’t express enough how deeply moving that is to realize.

I loved this story. I wish I could rate it 4.5 here, because while it wasn’t perfect, it was a realistic and emotional portrayal from a perspective that wasn’t frequent from actual historical accounts. It’s truly why I love historical fiction, because while the story may be an amalgamation of real women’s histories, the novelization frames it in a way that connects with the readers and inspires the empathy that is deserves.

I will continue to add Sandra Dallas to my “must read author” list, and I’m excited to see what other light she can shed on historical western women!"
