I would consider this to be dark romance, which isn't something I read a lot of, but I found this one to be quite enjoyable. I picked this as my read for the LGBTQ+ challenge for the Ladies of Horror Readathon in celebration of Women in Horror Month, and I feel like this was a good choice. <br/><br/>The Gilda Stories has a lot of heart. The main character escaped from slavery, and is kindly taken in by a new family. I was immediately wrapped up with in the lives of the women working at the brothel in the beginning, and my interest grew from there. The sections of the book are broken up every few years as the main character travels and tries new things. The core of this book is about family, and what that means to people who have eternal life. <br/><br/>Most of the vampires in this book are far nicer than any vampires from other books I've read. I liked that they try to benefit society, but I would have liked a little more of the horror aspect to be involved. However, I really liked the characters & was interested in their vampire lifestyle. <br/><br/>I'm happy that I picked this book up, and I would definitely read more from Jewelle Gomez. I actually already ordered a poetry collection by her, so I'm looking forward to that. Her writing is gorgeous, and I recommend checking out her work. This book is slower-paced, and I loved seeing what was going to happen to the characters. I've thought about this book quite a few times since I finished it."
