The Wicked Deep - Likewise Book Reviews
"I honestly didn’t think I would like this book as much as I did. I wasn’t completely hooked within the first few chapters, but as the story progressed, the better it got. I finished it in about 10 hours. It has its flaws, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. If you’re looking for a quick but fun read, this is the book for you! ⭐️ 3.8/5"

Perfect mid October rainy day read! The whole book was super atmospheric and I felt like I was genuinely in Sparrow with Penny. I read this in almost 1 sitting. "

"Writing style is good. The big twist can be seen fairly early. When the reveal occurred,. I was both unsurprised and validated. While the story feels original, there are wonky aspects that I had a hard time ignoring. The partying at the start and end of the Season just didn't make sense. Inbreeding? Maybe that explains why the townsfolk go to the water and get drunk when they know murders happen there. And THEY SWIM IN THE WATER knowing about the drownings! Huh? I also wonder about the great attachment these people have to a town where 3 or more murders happen every year. I mean, move out before your daughters are possessed and your sons are killed! Right? There's a kind of horror and nonchalance happening in that there town of Sparrow. "Oh No! Another body!! Well that's just what happens here, so let's have another party!" Weird stuff!

I don't know. I kept turning pages and definitely liked some of the elements here, but there were other elements I felt needed a little more work.

2.75 - 3 stars"

"This was a book I couldn't put down. Every detail, every part of the story was SO interesting. I guess I just wasn't too happy with the ending. Still a great book I'd recommend, though. Shea Ernshaw has a talent for taking you away into her written worlds.

Three sisters, Marguerite, Aurora, and Hazel Swan are accused of being witches, basically for being too beautiful & seductive. They had bags of stones tied to their feet and were drown in the harbor of Sparrow, Oregon. Ever year since, singing can be heard from the harbor, and every year the spirits of the three sisters inhabit the bodies of three local girls. They use these three girls to lure at least one boy, each, into the harbor to drown. Retribution.
Penny Talbot is a teenage girl who lives on an island, not too far out from the shores of Sparrow, Oregon. Penny and her mother run the lighthouse on their island, read tea leaves together, and mourn Penny's father who disappeared one night with no explanation.
Penny likes to keep to herself, but her best friend Rose talks her into attending an end of the school year party that is also a yearly tradition welcome the Swan Sisters and the beginning of the summer solstice. At this party Penny meets an out of town young man looking for work and camping on the beach. Penny finally invites him to work on her island, as there is much her and her mom have for him to do to aid in catching up after her father's disappearance. She tells him the local legend of the Swan Sisters and together they watch as some of the local girls wade into the water, scared and daring to be taken, or inhabited, by one of the sisters.
Penny takes him back to her island and sets him up in one of the small worker's cabins. He begins to work in the fruit orchard and through daily tasks and much time spent together, the two forget the madness going on in town, and the boy showing up dead in the harbor. They begin to fall in love and slowly reveal their deepest secrets with each other.
He reveals that his own brother was drowned in their harbor only one year before, and he had come to investigate, knowing it could not have been suicide. Penny reveals that she can see the sisters beneath the faces of the girls they have inhabited. BUT, there are MORE secrets that must come to light before the end of summer solstice.
The history of the lighthouse and the island is fully bared. The fate of Penny's father is revealed. A deeper understanding of the three sisters Swan is exposed, and it's a story of heartbreak and love, redemption, and retribution.

Shea Ernshaw has solidified her place as one of my top favorite authors between this book and "A History of Wild Places"."
"Oh my goodness...this book. I'm speechless. It took me forever to finish this book due to a reading slump that I fell into but this book did not disappoint. It's well worth the read. I'm shocked at the ending. I didn't expect any of that. Wow. This needs to be a movie like NOW!!!! I must say that this book is definitely a favorite of mine!"

"This book was good. It plays with your mind a little and has a magic trance that when you try to put it down...you just can’t. "
"Read this book as part of my 2018 Goodreads Reading Challenge. Recalled hearing about this book from a blog or Buzzfeed and the description peaked my interest for an interesting sounding storyline for a YA book on witches.

Once a sample was available for the Kindle, I downloaded and read to see if it would grab me…it did and I bought the book.

I enjoyed the main character and the love interest (Penny and Bo) as much as the setting and the legend of the 3 Sisters that the town thrives on for income from the tourists every summer.

The book keeps your attention for trying to figure out which girls that the witches have possessed for that year and what thier final plans are for the town and it’s inhabitants and the twist at the end.

I found it well written and felt like I could get the feel for what this little seaside town was like and Penny’s island. Penny’s inner thoughts and point of view was also well done and informative keep the story going.

I personally gave it 5 stars and would definitely read it again and recommend it."
