Nevernight - Likewise Book Reviews
"I think I was left with more questions than answers and well, that’s what the first book in a “quadrilogy” does right? (I don’t think that’s a word.. update: it’s called a quartet!) However, I can’t say that I wasn’t glued to Mia from the very first page. Who wouldn’t want to see what the amount of rage a 10 year old can harbor and manipulate when her entire family is wasted away. What vengeance filled leaps can she make when that same rage gives her dark shadow powers? We meet Mia at her father’s death, her mother’s demise, and almost her own watery grave. But she’s got more up her sleeve than tears and temper tantrums. She’s got gravebone, the not-cat and and nothing but rock bottom to brace herself. Six years later, she’s ruthless, deadly and set on a course for vengeance that, as all great stories tell, ends up being so much more than what you see. Mia came to the Red Church for the access, and stayed for answers to questions she didn’t even know she had. Love is always a Tric of the shadows… and Ash is only the result of a strong fire… but can only burn so long. Who’s Cleo?? Where’s Mercurio? Happy reading… "
"I was down on my luck with books, tired of the unoriginal tropes, in the mood for escape and release. I tried reading this story once before but was not in the right mind to keep up with it all. What I thought was unappealing side stories began weaving a rich tapestry into the world. With the help of self notes the multitude of characters gave the story new life. Cunning and suprises I haven't seen since I read Red Rising by Peirce Brown.

I'm so pleased I picked this up again. I very much enjoyed the main protagonist. She had a bad mouth and was unpredictable my favorite kind. The humor, famila, blood, love, lust, sword play all swirled together to make a fun rich story I will be rereading for years to come.

The story starts with a man telling Mia's story so throughout the book he is speaking to the reader which made the book even more badass. Some of the sentences just spoke to me and I began to nod along or growl in anger. This became another of those stories that I will be badgering everyone I know and don't to read it. That means you!

When all is blood, blood is all."
"Jay Kristoff gives his female protagonist- a minor, by the way- a magical boob job in this book. There’s no reason for it. There’s also been issues of racism, antisemitism, and harmful uses of Māori culture brought up in this book. There’s plenty of reviews that go into further detail about this and YouTube videos"

"Originally I was going to rate the book 3.5 stars but the ending was so great I just had to bump it up! The imagery in Nevernight is so clear and startling, and the contrast between the two points of view at the beginning is beautiful. However, the middle of this book was a struggle to get through for me. I’m glad I pushed through because the ending was fast paced, had lots of good twists, and I enjoyed the cliffhanger."

"Brilliant book, well written. Great characters, funny, witty. Best book I’ve read for a while. Couldn’t put it down. Cannot wait for the next one. "
"Never flinch, never fear, and never, ever forget.
4.5 stars - only because I struggled so much in the beginning

Honestly, I only decided to read this series because I wanted the expensive special edition set on shelf and if I'm going to spend that much money on books I should probably try to read them first, right?

This book was both intriguing and complicating. It was my first time reading a book by Jay Kristoff and the writing is more challenging than I've experienced in the past but it was worth it to stick through to the end. I think around the 60% mark either the story became a little less complicated or I mastered understanding. It took me roughly 3 days to get through the first 60% and then a few hours to finish off the last 40% and at that point I couldn't put the book down. I'm diving immediately into book 2 (and then 3) and I'll probably read the rest of Jay Kristoff's novels after that. I've already read some spoilers for the rest of this series (couldn't help myself, I seriously needed to know) but they just made me all the more excited to continue reading."

"It took me far too long to make it through this book. To be torn between reading and work is a sad thing indeed.

I loved the set up, with footnotes added to make things interesting. And of course the *setting* is delightful.

Mia is fierce and I love it, especially because there are moments when her vulnerability is revealed and I live for that."

"The only reason I want to read this is because of ReadWithCindy's rant review that I've rewatched a thousand times."
"This book just wasn't engaging enough for me to finish. Maybe it's because it's out of my age bracket being 28? Overall, I felt the writing was trying so hard to be literary and it just isn't. The characters are 16 and the audience probably is too, no need to use excessive descriptions and complicated vocabulary (poorly placed might I add). If I had to explain what this reminded me of it would be the 7th grade book report on the Maximun Ride novels by James Patterson but thrown into a Thesaurus generator."
"This series is my all time favourite! I fell upon the third book “Darkdawn” in a book store and to be honest it was a cover buy. When I got home realized it was the third and bought the first two. Absolutely one of the best series I’ve ever read. Made me fall in love with Jay Kristoff and many of his other books. Just the right amount of action/fantasy, gory, sexiness. And the plot twist was one no one saw coming ♥️ can’t wait to see his next projects "
"I think I've found my new favourite author! Intelligent writing✔Witty humour✔Fantasy languages✔ Beautiful world-building✔Strong female lead✔Realistic character development✔ The narration and footnotes especially were the funniest I've ever read and not overdone; 10/10 beyond all expectations. "

"This book was darker than I usually read, but I really enjoyed it. I didn't see the ending coming and was pretty surprised. I haven't read the next one yet. Did you?"
