A GOODREADS BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR • A fiery feminist fantasy tale set in 1950s America where thousands of women have spontaneously transformed into dragons, exploding notions of a woman’s place in the world and expanding minds about accepting others for who they really are. "Ferociously imagined…and as exhilarating as a ride on dragonback." —Lev Grossman, bestselling author of The Magicians Trilogy "Completely fierce, unmistakably feminist, and subversively funny." —Bonnie Garmus, bestselling author of Lessons in Chemistry In the first adult novel by the New York Times bestselling author of The Ogress and The Orphans, Alex Green is a young girl in a world much like ours, except for its most seminal event: the Mass Dragoning of 1955, when hundreds of thousands of ordinary wives and mothers sprouted wings, scales, and talons; left a trail of fiery destruction in their path; and took to the skies. Was it their choice? What will become of those left behind? Why did Alex’s beloved aunt Marla transform but her mother did not? Alex doesn’t know. It’s taboo to speak of. Forced into silence, Alex nevertheless must face the consequences of this astonishing event: a mother more protective than ever; an absentee father; the upsetting insistence that her aunt never even existed; and watching her beloved cousin Bea become dangerously obsessed with the forbidden. In this timely and timeless speculative novel, award-winning author Kelly Barnhill boldly explores rage, memory, and the tyranny of forced limitations. When Women Were Dragons exposes a world that wants to keep women small—their lives and their prospects—and examines what happens when they rise en masse and take up the space they deserve.

" Such an intriguing concept but unfortunately it doesn’t live up to the fierceness of the title. This was more a coming of age story. Not horrible but not what I was expecting. I wanted a fierce feminist women challenge systemic patriarchy tale but instead got a fictional memoir of oppression, yes, but mostly abandonment and secrecy. Instead of something along the lines of The Power you get dragons wearing lipstick, having purses and becoming caretakers. I originally gave this 3.5⭐️ but the more I think about this book the more annoyed I get. Changed my rating to 3⭐️."

"So much more than just a story. This is for anyone who has felt the desire to escape their circumstances. Beautiful from start to finish, often heart wrenching and brutal in its absolute honesty. 5 stars doesn't cover it. Will be one I think about for weeks. "

"Thought the title was a metaphor, which it is in a way but also, the book is actually about women turning into dragons and it is so beautiful and sincere and female and heart breaking and like nothing I’ve ever read before and I cried and almost wished for a moment that I could also become a dragon as well."

"this is not a book i would normally go for and i cant believe that it turned out to be one of my favorite books! set in the 1950's you follow this girl going through life and how it was at that time period just add in the fact woman spontaneously turn into dragons! this was a very heartfelt book!"

"Can a book be stunning? After reading this one, I think they can be. This is just such a wonderful study on female relationships and growing up. Even with the sometimes silly visuals of dragons I still found my eyes welling up with emotions both bitter and sweet. I have to return it to my library but I imagine it won't be long till my own copy is sitting on my shelf "

"This book holds up a mirror to America's issues with sexism and discrimination toward groups of people."

"This book screams women’s rights 100%. It is about women standing up for themselves in a society where they’re told to his, sit down, be quiet, and follow “the rules.” It’s a good read but a little peculiar. "

"8/23/23: beautiful coming of age story entwined with the feminine world of being forced to stay small and quiet. What potential a dragon can have if the world allowed it"
