"This was a DNF for me. I bailed. I very, VERY rarely bail on books, but I couldn’t keep trudging through this one. I gave it 100 pages in which to woo me, and it fell short. <br/><br/>"
"This was my second steampunk novel and so far I'm not totally sure what I think of the genre. This, to me, was hard to read. It was very detailed oriented, I found myself skimming bits and pieces here and there to get to the story. I was expecting a fast pace novel for the plot of this book. While it wasn't at a crawl, it wasn't at a gallop either.<br/><br/>I liked the story, even though I had a hard time with all the details. The plot was really interesting to me. The idea of the 'Little Beasties' was interesting. I liked Finley, Griff, Jasper and even Jack Dandy. I'm hoping that the details were just a lot of world building, because I do plan on trying out the second novel.<br/><br/>I know I wasn't as impressed with this as others seemed to have been. But, despite everything, I did like it. I didn't hate it. I'm actually interested in what happens after the ending of this book. It has a great plot, hopefully I can focus better when the next one comes out."

"London 1897, Finley Jayne is about to teach the son of her new employer Felix a lesson in manners. Finley was a maid in his father's household and after making unwanted advances, she is overtaken by her darker nature. When Finley is afraid or threatened, her dark side takes over granting her a great and terrible abilities such as heightened senses, strength, speed and shorter healing duration. After beating up the young lordling, her instincts tell her to run away. In her flight from the scene of another dismissal she is hit by a velocycle (like a modern day motorcycle) carrying the Duke of Greythorne, Griffin King. Griffin decides to take the injured servant into his home where she meets his friends Emily, mechanical genius, Sam, human-machine hybrid, Jasper, American cowboy with inhuman speed and his aunt Cordelia, specializes in telepathy and telekinesis. Griffin himself is able to use the power of and travel in the Aether, the invisible layer where spirits dwell. Before bringing Finley into his house, Griffin and his motley crew were trying to find and eliminate their greatest enemy "The Machinist" who almost killed Sam and has been using automotons to create unrest. The Machinist is planning something big and Griffin knows that they will need Finley to help bring the villain to justice but not everyone trusts Finley's darker side. Kady Cross spins an intriguing tale which incorporates aspects of steampunk, fantasy, horror, and classic stories, such as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, to create a new, unique and fast paced thrill ride. For young adults and adults alike that loved The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Van Helsing will love this series. Highly recommended. Ages 16+"
