Once upon a time, there was a girl who wanted to be pretty . . .Aza's singing is the fairest in all the land, and the most unusual. She can "throw" her voice so it seems to come from anywhere. But singing is only one of the two qualities prized in the Kingdom of Ayortha. Aza doesn't possess the other: beauty. Not even close. She's hidden in the shadows in her parents' inn, but when she becomes lady-in-waiting to the new queen, she has to step into the light—especially when the queen demands a dangerous favor. A magic mirror, a charming prince, a jealous queen, palace intrigue, and an injured king twine into a maze that Aza must penetrate to save herself and her beloved kingdom.

"Ugh this book is a masterpiece. While I know little of cozy fantasy I feel like its based on the readers vibes, and holy crap this screams cozy fantasy to me. This is my - well I don't know how many times I've read this since I was old enough to read, but. Lots. I will say I forgot how brutal this book could be and it was almost shocking considering I hadn't read it in so long!

It's my comfort book, and apparently one I can read in just a few hours despite it being a little over 300 pages. I decided to reread it because I wanted to write an actual review for it, but I don't think I have much to say really. It's just so wonderful, and rereading it as a full adult human woman, there's an extra layer there that somehow made me connect even deeper than I had as child and preteen. Unless something weird happens, I'm pretty sure this will remain my favorite book of all time, ever.

Update: 1pm on 12/8/2022 - I already want to reread... maybe I'll do a little gail carson levine reading marathon next week after finals..."
