'A RIVETING EMOTIONAL READ THAT KEPT ME ON THE EDGE!'-- Melissa Marr, author of the bestselling Wicked Lovely series When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something frightening enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that got her sent to Thurmond, a government 'rehabilitation camp'. Ruby might have survived the mysterious disease that killed most of America's children, but she and the others had emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they could not control. Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones. When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now on the run, she is desperate to find East River, the only safe haven left for kids like her, and she joins a group of other runaways who have escaped their own camps. Liam, their brave leader, is falling for Ruby, but she can't risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents. When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all Liam. But there are also other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice - and one that may mean giving up her only chance at having a life worth living. The first book in the NYT bestselling series that is soon to become a major motion picture.MORE PRAISE FOR THE DARKEST MINDS'The story's quick-paced action leads to a heartbreaking cliffhanger that will have readers eager for the next book ...' -- Publishers Weekly'Haunting ... "Watched the movie on a whim and fell in love!! So happy the book was better as it usually is. And even if they never make film versions of the rest of the series, I can find out what happens in the next two books. That's next up on my reading list"

"Dnf this with about an hour left on the audiobook. Honestly I would have done it earlier but I was about 95% positive I knew how it would end and had to make sure I was correct. So my first complaint would be a very predictable plot. I didn't like the main character Ruby and her love interest Liam. Ruby was way to smart to be taken at the age of ten and never schooled beyond that point. Liam so bland and blindingly trusting I wanted to throttle him most of the time. The best characters in the book was two side ones Chubs and Zu. I found myself daydreaming of how much better it would have been if the story was about them and if we never met Ruby and Liam. I was aware that this might have been a set up for the rest of the series but there wasn't enough in this plot to keep me going."

"3.5 stars

This was a good book but not as good as everyone thought a few years ago. This book was hyped so much and was everywhere. It does start good in the beginning. Right away the book starts with the kids getting powers and then being put into camps. The plot is entertaining. With the kids getting powers and running away from the government.

Towards the middle the book starts slowing down because it becomes a long road trip with a few car chases thrown in.

Ruby was bland in the beginning but she improves towards the end. All the characters grow on you over time. Zu is cute. Chubs can be annoying sometimes but also funny. Also we needed a rational person in the group. Liam is sweet but that can be a flaw sometimes.

The romance was weak. Ruby and Liam had no chemistry. It was very instant love."
