"usually you find out an author is racist from the names they give their poor cat, hearing a murder mystery's original title, or naming one of their two black characters 'shacklebolt'. most of the time you have a heads up from the context of how you heard about it, like 'mein kampf' or 'the turner diaries'.
tarzan completely blindsided me. in retrospect i was probably expecting something KINDA racist (because it's a 1912 book taking place in an african jungle), but not as bad as this.
we're talking 'main character is a white supremacist who regularly lynches black people years before jane ever shows up and blurts out her concept of racial hierarchies and how terrified she is of miscegenation'. we're talking 'birth of a nation'-style genocide endings as tarzan and his french buddies gleefully murder every black man they find and keep the women as trophies.
this book is F*cKed UP."
"I finally decided to read this book and I wasn't disappointed. The beginning was a little slow to start but there was a lot of history and backstory to cover like how Jane and her father got to the jungle and how Tarzan himself got there. As the story progressed there was quite a bit of nothing happening and then periods of great action and suspense. It was a very likable read and I am sure I will read more of thwarted series now that the main characters are established."
