Charles Dickens
One of the finest novels by iconic British author Charles Dickens, this Victorian tale follows the good-natured orphan Pip as he makes his way through life. As a boy, Pip crosses paths with a convict named Magwitch, a man who will heavily influence Pip’s adulthood. Meanwhile, the earnest young man falls for the beautiful Estella, the adoptive daughter of the affluent and eccentric Miss Havisham. Widely considered to be Dickens's last great book, the story is steeped in romance and features the writer's familiar themes of crime, punishment, and societal struggle.

"I did read this for school so note that I didn’t choose to read this book. I can definitely say that this is the worst book I’ve ever had to read for school. The language was incredibly hard to understand and it moves at a really slow pace. The plot had some good parts to it but the way of writing made it hard to enjoy."

"An examination of human hope and desires. Character and conscience above all else.<br/><br/>"No varnish can hide the grain of wood, for the more varnish one applies, the more the wood will begin to express itself""

"Not a bad book, the ending was a little unsatisfying for me though (an interpretation kind) "

"I had little expectations going into this and it was just as I expected. Dickens's novels are just too wordy to keep my interest."

"I found the author's view overly rosy on a few things (especially re: repatriation and Canadian multiculturalism) but there were also a lot of thought provoking ideas that I'll take forward into my own work."

"3.5 stars- the middle of the book was extremely boring for me but I adore the end. It wraps everything up in a perfect bow and I actually cried a little bit."

"I was caught off guard by how much I loved this book. The writing and dialogue are fantastic and the story is woven so nicely together. A wealth of lovable characters. Earthy, tangible and touchable, country life, city life, joys and sorrows and pains. Just a mighty fine book to read by a fireplace."

"I just finished a book called The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins. It’s a modern twist on Jane Eyre. I couldn’t put it down!"
