"Seems like people love this series on GoodReads and I'm not sure why. The plot was predictable and moralizing, the characters flat and stereotypical, and the dialogue... don't even get me started on the dialogue. Some entertainment value, but I think I could have done without this trilogy."
"A very well-done book series. Everything does come together quite well. There are a few decisions by the author that I felt didn't quite make sense, but most of it is very smooth and logical.
The way all of the questions become answered in the end is pretty satisfying and all the pieces do fit together. In fact, I would argue that the answer is too simple. While it was happening, it sounded like there were so many strange people and events that needed to be solved, but the explanation was all so simple and cohesive that it was almost anticlimactic. Alas, that is the way of real mysteries in the real world. They seem incomprehensible until you know the answer, then they seem obvious. Very good.
(Without spoilers) my main complaint with the ending is (the main characters at least think) that so many people knew the truth. All the regants, and basically anyone involved with the empire? If that were the case, there is no way the truth would have remained a secret for a thousand years. It would have at least been a rumor or fairy story or cult. Unless <spoiler>the Patriarch was using magic</spoiler> to somehow suppress the knowledge.
I understand that the truth, in reality, can be hidden or widely regarded as a "conspiracy theory" in the real world, even when many people know what is real. But it seems a bit ridiculous to me that when only one thousand years ago everyone in the world knew the truth, now the entire populous can't even imagine that the truth is a possibility.

Still, this is a very enjoyable story with very few continuity or "believability" (there are many many lucky events) issues. I thoroughly enjoyed it."
