NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER“Fully realized, wholly absorbing and almost painfully suspenseful...The journey is mesmerizing.” —New York Times A woman receives an unexpected visitor during a deadly snowstorm in this chilling thriller from New York Times bestselling author Heather Gudenkauf.True crime writer Wylie Lark doesn’t mind being snowed in at the isolated farmhouse where she’s retreated to write her new book. A cozy fire, complete silence. It would be perfect, if not for the fact that decades earlier, at this very house, two people were murdered in cold blood and a girl disappeared without a trace. As the storm worsens, Wylie finds herself trapped inside the house, haunted by the secrets contained within its walls—haunted by secrets of her own. Then she discovers a small child in the snow just outside. After bringing the child inside for warmth and safety, she begins to search for answers. But soon it becomes clear that the farmhouse isn’t as isolated as she thought, and someone is willing to do anything to find them.Don’t miss Heather’s upcoming twisty locked-room thriller, EVERYONE IS WATCHING! "My review has ending up vastly changing from how I thought it was going to go. For the first 40% of the book I struggled. I could not get invested, it felt overwhelmingly flat. I think my lack of interest sparked from there being little to no character development, we were just thrown into 3 stories. I asked myself more than once, “How dumb is Wylie?”
While I figured out on my own how the three stories merged well before it was revealed, I did find myself wanting to know how it got there and how it ended. Everything got more interesting once I hit that 40% mark.
Another thought I had was how it was written as if it were a true crime. I was happy to find that was purposeful. "
"This book was so incredible; there's so much intensity and mystery, and the author gives you so many details that I felt like a little detective trying to figure out what all went down, and the writing is so immersive that you 1 can imagine it as a movie and I love that in thrillers significantly because it just added a lot to the whole reading experience it also felt like I was listing to a true & crime podcast which made it a quick easy read in the book you jump timelines and follow three different pov's, but they all end up correlating that was amazing because I genuinely couldn't figured out how so when it came all together it was so satisfying and well thought out the atmosphere in this book was pretty amazing, especially the current timeline the blizzard that makes this woman snowed into this house by herself till she isn't added to the winter coldness and suspefulness of the story if you read dark places and local women missing and liked those this is right up there with both absolutely recommend for the winter time."
