Like many ambitious New York City teenagers, Craig Gilner sees entry into Manhattan’s Executive Pre-Professional High School as the ticket to his future. Determined to succeed at life—which means getting into the right high school to get into the right college to get the right job—Craig studies night and day to ace the entrance exam, and does. That’s when things start to get crazy. At his new school, Craig realizes that he isn't brilliant compared to the other kids; he’s just average, and maybe not even that. He soon sees his once-perfect future crumbling away. The stress becomes unbearable and Craig stops eating and sleeping—until, one night, he nearly kills himself.Craig’s suicidal episode gets him checked into a mental hospital, where his new neighbors include a transsexual sex addict, a girl who has scarred her own face with scissors, and the self-elected President Armelio. There, isolated from the crushing pressures of school and friends, Craig is finally able to confront the sources of his anxiety.Ned Vizzini, who himself spent time in a psychiatric hospital, has created a remarkably moving tale about the sometimes unexpected road to happiness. For a novel about depression, it’s definitely a funny story.

"I dunno. Not for me. <br/><br/>The concept of this was okay and the overall story was interesting. <br/><br/>The author’s form of storytelling was one of the bigger downsides of this for me. I don’t really want to hear about how a teenage guy and his raging hormones around girls. It got gross and sexist. <br/><br/>This features a depressed 15 year-old boy named Craig who has suicidal thoughts and occasionally smokes pot. He eventually gets help for this. But you have go through his childhood and nearly all his backstory before he can get any help at all. <br/> • His character was written as if he was 18 or older. He did not act like a 15 year old. The rest of the cast didn’t act their ages unless they were above the age of 20. <br/><br/>I was surprised at how time was used. The parts set in modern times when Craig was 15 were quite slow. This book actually takes about a week, give or take a few days. A large chunk of this was the backstory which was much faster. <br/><br/>It was interesting but I’m not sure if I really enjoyed it. <br/><br/>"
"This story was quite odd and at some times I couldn’t read much for I was so confused but it’s beautifully written and I can relate deeply to Craig about his perspective of life. “I can't eat and I can't sleep. I'm not doing well in terms of being a functional human, you know?” Real.
