"o "It struck Evie then. How her predicament had escalated from unemployed butcher’s daughter to aiding and abetting this kingdom’s greatest enemy in an alarmingly short amount of time."
While taking a shortcut through the forest, Evie encounters the infamous Villian. He is injured and hiding from royal guards. Soon, he is rescuing her from the guards arrows. The encounter results in a job as the Villian's assistant.
Evil makes friends and a nemesis at Massacre Manor. She balances work and her home life where she is the sole provider for her ill father and younger sister.
As the Villian's plans for robbing the kings shipments are foiled over and over, they become aware of a traitor. Evie works with the Villian to solve the identity of the traitor.
The Villian may not be as villainous as his title implies. The more the reader gets to know him, the more they understand he isn't as evil as he tries to portray.
Evie is sunshine and naivete. As the book goes on, they (and the reader) are forced to question the line between good and evil.
Assistant is told in limited 3rd person from the point of views of Evie and the Villian. The characters are well.developed and lovable. The world building is believable.
The book ends in a cliff hanger but not one that left me angry.
I did not like listening to the audio book as much as a liked reading the text. The narrator had a cadence to her voice I found annoying. The book.felt more mature somehow when I was reading it.
Recommended for anyone who enjoys funny banter or who questions the ambiguity of good and bad.
Content warnings- no sex, mild swearing (infrequent but includes the F-word), mild blood and gore (decapitated heads are the worst), sexual harassment, cliffhanger ending

"This whole thing felt very juvenile. There is a difference in a slow burn “will they won’t they” and grown adults pining for seemingly no reason. I was exasperated by the banter at the 70% mark. I may read the sequel just because I want to know what the deal is with the frog who was by far the most interesting character even though he can’t talk. "
"When I say I want a quality fantasy romance that won't make me cringe, this is what I want. It's a fantastic book, to put it lightly! I really, really enjoyed that the story lacked overly used villain and romance tropes. The plot felt fresh and peculiar, and it's wasn't one of your general oh-i-love-a-bad-guy-who's-not-even-bad-lmao scenarios. However, it also wasn't toxic, and I really admire how the author managed to balance it out. If you like fantasy romance that doesn't focus on magic and politics too much (but still has a considerable part about them) and constantly fall in love with the villains, this will definitely be a great read for you!
