David Benioff
From the critically acclaimed author of The 25th Hour and When the Nines Roll Over and co-creator of the HBO series Game of Thrones, a captivating novel about war, courage, survival — and a remarkable friendship that ripples across a lifetime. During the Nazis’ brutal siege of Leningrad, Lev Beniov is arrested for looting and thrown into the same cell as a handsome deserter named Kolya. Instead of being executed, Lev and Kolya are given a shot at saving their own lives by complying with an outrageous directive: secure a dozen eggs for a powerful Soviet colonel to use in his daughter’s wedding cake. In a city cut off from all supplies and suffering unbelievable deprivation, Lev and Kolya embark on a hunt through the dire lawlessness of Leningrad and behind enemy lines to find the impossible. By turns insightful and funny, thrilling and terrifying, the New York Times bestseller City of Thieves is a gripping, cinematic World War II adventure and an intimate coming-of-age story with an utterly contemporary feel for how boys become men.

"A pair of unlikely characters go on an unlikely and seemingly impossible mission: to find a dozen eggs in Leningrad during the WWII siege. Against that backdrop, many unexpected things happen to the duo who will work their way into your heart until you’re rooting for them, against all odds. Great read!"

"Packs a punch for how short the novel is! Very well written and engaging. This book will definitely be considered a classic in about 50 years! "

"Searching for eggs during the siege of Stalingrad? Wry story from the scriptwriter of GOT. "

"I picked up this book after seeing it was written by David Benioff (I’m a huge GOT fan) and I was far from disappointed. He tells a war-siege story with wit, humor, and mixes in some nearly unbearable gruesome scenes. It’s a fairly short read but entertaining and overall such a well written story!"

"Even with the humor it can be a tough read since it deals with such traumatic themes. It was very well written and I enjoyed the two main characters, whom embodies their age and the struggle of being an adolescent in wartime."

"This book was so dichotomous in the best way. A humorous plot driving point with series and sad time and overall vibe. "

"I really had no clue what I would think of this book when I started, but I ended up loving it (despite the one chapter where I had to put the book down and give my dog a ton of hugs and kisses). Benioff writes a wonderful period piece with an amazing mixture of humor and raw emotion. Definitely a must-read."

"I really enjoyed reading "City of Thieves", the book just got better as you kept reading. At first I was a little annoyed at how the two main characters acted pretty childish and raunchy even, but by the end I realized how accurate it probably is that they act the way they did. It was much more of an interesting read because of this making the two character's relationship a joy to follow. The ending was great too."
