"If you are a fan of edgy YA - like The Perks of Being a Wallflower - then this is the book for you. King writes very realistically and is not afraid to show life like it really is."

"Charlie and Vera are best friends...both have secrets they'd rather no one knew. Vera's mom was an ex stripper that abandoned her shortly after she was born and Charlie's dad physically abused his wife. Vera and Charlie set out to build a tree house in the woods and as they enter onto high school, they both secretly love each other, but never really explore that option beyond being best friends.

Charlie falls in with the detention head crowd and hooks up with a girl that is crazy in all the wrong ways. Vera works full time delivering pizza and falling for her 23 yr old coworker and exploring too much alcohol.

SPOILERS FROM HERE TO THE END
Charlie turns on Vera and Vera has had enough of him...until 1 day he calls her to tell her he's in trouble and he thinks his crazy girlfriend wants to burn down the local pet store.

Charile is found dead on his front lawn soon after and the pet store is burnt down...his engraved lighter framing him to the arson is found there....only Vera can find a way to clear Charlie's name and help her move on from losing the best friend she lost before he actually died."

"Vera is torn between the ultimate struggle of whether or not she should tell the police what really happened to her best friend when he died in poor circumstances. She struggles with alcoholism like herself help father and lives in the shadow of her stripper mother. She just wants things to be like they were before the death. And then there is the after the death. Before the death, she was in love with her best friend, or so she thought before he changed dramatically as they grew older. Charlie lived a tough home life, and it got to him. For Vera, it was only the bottle that got to her. This is a book of changing perspectives and time, that presents its self as edgy and captivating. Being forced to read this book for a class, I shocking ling fell in love with this book immediately. I loved the humor and the mystery and the drama and just how well written it was. While I find that it is inappropriate for the classroom, I think that high school students will love this book and it should be highly recommended."

"Favorite quote "How will I ever soar with the eagles if I'm surrounded by turkeys?" I loved the sarcasm and the writing style and especially the way the main character went from the invisible Vera Dietz to the invincible Vera Dietz."
