"Very thought-provoking! Humanity has made a perfect world, even overcoming death. But when no one dies, overpopulation is a problem that must be addressed. Scythes are the solution."

"Couldn’t finish the first one, my friend yelled at me for it but it just dragged on for me. I couldn’t stand either of the apprentices."

"Loved this book!! A YA science fiction book about the future. Technology as advanced so much that when people die they can be revived. People live for 100s of years. To keep the population at bay a select group of Scythes glean people- truly killing them. This book is about 2 young apprentice Scythes. I'm starting second of trilogy right away!"

"This book was the best I’ve read in the last two years. I fell in love with the world building first but then each character pulled me into the story. The language used by the author is nothing short of poetic and beautiful. The book takes twists and turns that not even I saw coming. I’ve never cried over a book before, but this one got me pretty damn close. Please do yourself a favor and read it"

"I have not been this excited about a book in a long time. The world building and premise of the book is gripping, with very interesting and relatable characters. This was literally one of those books that as soon as I got done reading it I wanted more and thankfully this is a trilogy! "

"I really enjoyed this book! 4 stars because it was a slow start and you king of have to hold on for a while to get to the good parts but it’s worth it! Super cool concept!"

"ABSOLUTELY ADORE THIS BOOK. The synopsis drew me in immediately. I love unique storylines and this one definitely has it. Scythe deserves to be included in the discussion of best dystopians like The Hunger Games. By the first page I was immersed in its wicked and incredible world. The protagonists are written so well and are very likable. The ending was fantastic. Everyone should read this book. "

"I didn’t “hate” this book, which is why it gets a 3, but it just wasn’t my cup of tea I guess. The concept of the story was fairly different than anything I’ve read before and it wasn’t bad, it just didn’t hold my interest very well. I think it’s a me problem and not the story itself.

In a nutshell, it’s a futuristic story of mankind that doesn’t have disease and people can live an infinite life, unless they are chosen to be removed from the world. So someone could live forever and change their bodies back to a teenager if they wanted at any point in life. If you happen to die in an accident, if you are brought to one of their special hospitals (it’s not called a hospital, I can’t recall what they are, sorry) and they can reset and fix you like nothing happened. Sounds wonderful right?

The issue with that is people can have as many kids as they want, but the world can only hold so many people. They need to get rid of some population in order to make room. There are people who are chosen to be Scythes (aka reapers) and will permanently remove people to make sure the world isn’t overpopulated.

This book follows one of those people who decides to take on an apprentice which many Scythes will do. Instead of the usual one apprentice, he took two people under his wing which apparently is never done. These two young people are sharing the experience of the training and what it takes to do that job.

In order to be accepted as a Scythe, you are tested. The apprentice must pass tests to be approved into that field. The bonus for coveting that position is you are safe from ever being removed from the world as well as your immediate family. So this first book dives into that and how these two new potential recruits handle the training. The downside for these two is only one of them can be chosen.

The concept of the story was interesting which is why I decided to read it. It just didn’t wow me, so I don’t really have interest in reading any more of the books related to this. I prefer fantasy books, but I don’t mind a bit of dystopian science fiction once in a while as well as thriller/horror/dark academia. This just didn’t do anything for me. Take my opinion with a grain of salt due to my track record of genre I read most which is not this. I just wanted to try and change it up a bit and it didn’t work for me."
