"Very important movie, definitely!"

"This movie is not insightful about race and bigotry. In fact, around the time it was released, the insight would have to be understood down the road. I suspect that it worked as escapism for that time, presenting a confident, dignified, black lead, and a liberal white family who work to understand the difficult situation of that time in society. Yes, it features a romanic interracial couple, but it does so in comedy form, and also does its best to put the racist white people (when in frame) in their place. Not much time is spent delving into the experience of black people in that time. However, it is insightful about family and identity, where race is more tongue-in-cheek. If not for the family aspect, I don't think this movie would have stood the test of time. I think it does, though, and for good reason. For one, the performances bring a charm to the screen that feels very modern, and makes me wonder if we really did need that Bernie Mac remake, even if the race roles were reversed. (Also keep in my mind I have never seen it, but I doubt I will ever want to). Sidney Poitier is the master presence of a strong, confident lead who plays it straight and isn't at all divorced from his sense of humor. Spencer Tracy is simply magnificent in how he can command so much integrity and still feel a little aloof at the same time. Katherine Hepburn has her usual gusto, but she also shows direct emotional weight in scenes where she doesn't utter a single word. Perhaps the only character that doesn't age well for me is the maid character. The role is annoying, sitcom comedy-relief. I also wish Katherine Houghton's character had more depth, but as the movie is, it has a biting humor and engages in an amusing senario, and when focused on the pure family aspects rise above the dated story. It was important to the representation of Black Americans and to the climate of the 60s, but in terms of insight into the relations, it fell a little short."
