"A disturbingly unsettling gothic tale. I felt immersed and like I stepped foot into the Victorian era of Bram Stoker’s darkest nightmares. Eggers’ cinematography and ability to play with light and shadows was masterful and frightened me in the most macabre way. The entire cast was on their A game but the standouts were without a doubt Lily Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult and Bill Skarsgaard. Lily proved herself her father’s daughter and her bewitched, unhinged performance carried the sinister tone of the film. As for Hoult, I have never seen a more convincing portrayal of the paralyzing nature of fear than his take on Thomas in Orlok’s castle. It was startling. Finally, I cannot say much about Bill for that was not Bill in this movie. He was truly Orlok and appeared to possess not a shred of humanity. His rotting corpse, deep accented voice and heavy countenance will haunt my dreams for nights to come. I hope this film gets its due at the Academy Awards."
"Fantastic performances, great world building through cinematography and set design, a really unsettling narrative. There is a deep subtext of sex, repression, sexism, society, and class in this; but it also works well as a vampire horror movie. I think the cast was perfect in this, Count Orlock (the vampire) was extremely unsettling/disturbing, and the vibe was perfect for what it was trying to portray. I certainly recommend viewers pay attention to the dialogue and think about what they're saying if they enjoy analyzing movies or understanding a deeper context. I also recommend viewers be okay with some pretty graphic imagery and lots of sex scenes or sexuality-related content. People who are uninterested in classical-literature type horror, lots of dialogue, and sex-related content should steer clear of this, but I thoroughly enjoyed it."
"Pros:
- The acting from the whole cast was great!
- The scenery/environment was beautifully done and met the mark for a Gothic film.
The writing was beautiful. Even though it is a period piece, I understood what they were saying.
Cons:
The film wastes the casting of Bill S. Unlike Pennwise, his monster in this is covered by darkness, CGI, and an AWFUL mustache. Instead of feeling frightened by his appearance, I thought I was looking at Waluigi from Nintendo.
- The pacing of this movie is SLOW, definitely don't watch this if you are tired.
- There is an unnecessary sex scene that doesn't make sense with the rest of the movie. It especially doesn't make sense considering how Lilly's character is acting in the scene.
- There were a lot of plot points that did not make sense to me, but then again I've never seen the original or read the books. So what do I know.
- The ending is lack luster. You'd think that for a vampire who has lived for centuries, he'd be a little more on the nose about when to return to his coffin. "
"A beautiful movie to watch. The cinematography, the setting, the atmosphere and the filming were great. Gothic, dark and weird? I did not watch the original movie so I found the story pretty weird. The acting was impressive and very enjoyable.
I had a hard time understanding parts of the dialogue as the English was odd to me. (Maybe the sono at the theatre did not help also)
Overall good movie and worth the watch.
