ShellOkay so I lost access to this account 🤪🥸 my new one is this one!!
Ghostie GalThis book has been on my TBR for literal years. I finally gave it a shot and I was pleasantly surprised! Not normally a fan of reading militaristic/government sci-fi lit, but I really enjoyed the straightforward narration of Drew, and his use of the video-game type abilities he was given. He and the other characters did sort of fall flat, I would’ve liked to see a bit more liveliness in the writing, but none the less I enjoyed the fast-paced nature of the battles mixed with moments of humor. Overall a great read!
Ghostie GalA great introduction to neurology, I really appreciated learning more about the connection between the brain, mind, and music. Humans truly are musical beings, and Sacks does a great job of articulating this complex and thoughtful phenomenon. Exploring not only how some are musically impaired, but also musically gifted, in addition to how those with neurocognitive disorders may benefit from musical therapy, this book is great for anyone interested in putting to words what they experience when listening to music! Though at times hard to comb through, it’s a relatively easy read and goes by quick for a nonfiction book.
Ghostie GalThough I expected a darker nature to this book, I was surprised by Bardugos macabre and bitter writing. I’m not typically a fan of this style, it’s reminiscent of Gideon the Ninth, which I similarly enjoyed yet didn’t exactly love. This book is pretty drawn out, and though it picks up pace towards the end I’m not drawn to read the second book. Could easily be read as a stand alone, includes a morally grey MC with ritualistic magic and dark academia vibes.
Ghostie GalThis book is conversational, reflective, and rich with insight regarding how our social interactions with others are important to connecting deeply with and truly seeing the people around us. It forces you to think more about not just your own perspective but the POV of others and how it informs the way they present themselves to you. So thoughtful I’d have to take notes to remember it all, but a low-stakes way to learn more about how to understand others. Typical of a philosophical/psychological type book, some parts fell flat for me, more for personal preference than anything. Overall, this was almost a five star, really fantastic narration and vivid storytelling intertwined with analysis and quotes from other great thinkers.
Ghostie GalAbsolutely loved the atmosphere of this book: deep south summertime mystery mixed with drama and a little bit of romance too. I could hear the buzz of the mosquitos, feel the thick summer air, and see the characters as they raced to uncover the secrets of the devout community with a venomous spirit. The MC was interestingly morally grey, making choices that allow the reader to question the line between right and wrong, and what it means to live an authentic/free life. The plot twist fell slightly flat but the story was entertaining from beginning to end. Reads like a movie!! Read this if you want a book about the dark side to superstition and religious faith, with a murder investigation center stage.
Ghostie GalA twist on the Sherlock Holmes stories with a young female MC, I really loved the father-daughter dynamic that blossomed between the two characters. Though a little drawn out, the mystery was entertaining and I didn’t see the ending coming. Overall has cozy mystery vibes that make it a great read for some down time.
Ghostie GalI read this in two days and really enjoyed it! Light hearted, fun read with a friend group you want to be a part of. Gave all the summer vibes that I needed to get started on my break from school
Ghostie GalThoughtful and assertive without being overwhelming or redundant, this book is about how the stories we tell about women and men go on to affect our roles in society and inner experience/perception of ourselves. Would recommend to anyone who wants to think more about how women are depicted in well known myths!
Ghostie GalI really appreciated the icy atmosphere of this story: nothing is more scary than isolation on a mountain resort with frostbite slowly creeping in. I enjoyed the dual narration between characters Erin and Liz, and found the dynamics between the corporate coworkers equal parts interesting and comedic in their frivolousness. The plot twist was expected but still shocking, and the resolution satisfying. Would definitely recommend to others. Reads like a lifetime movie, if that provides you with any context as to the reading experience.
