Keana PattersonI read this book in one sitting! I wanted to take my time with it but I could not put it down. I've never read a novel in poetry form and as a someone who loves to read and is a poet, this is a dream!

Xiomara (which is such a beautiful name), is a 10th grader who is trying to navigate life in the midst of starting 10th grade, being raised in a strict, religious household, and starting to get teenage fever. Her notebook is her sanctuary.

My younger self and even some parts of my current self relates to Xiomara quite a bit so I felt her poems so deeply. I'm not a fan of haikus but this book made me want to explore and try my hand at writing them. This has to be my favorite book so far this year.

Keana PattersonAlright, let’s get straight to it. Does this book really need an introduction? Not really. Since I’ve already watched the movie a gazillion times and this was my first time reading the book, I read all the of the characters in the voices of the actresses. Usually I hate watching a movie before I read a book but I was a child that couldn’t read when the movie came out so that’s not my fault lol!

I related to Savannah the most. Always moving, oldest daughter, head on straight (for the most part

Keana PattersonI love me a good, juicy church read! This collection follows the tale of 9 black women and their conflict between beliefs and desire. Although this book is fiction, I believe this book still opens the door for important conversations to be had. Women who were raised in the church or even come to believe later in life often struggle with their sexual identity outside of religion. Philyaw writes so beautifully and left me wanting more! It’s not too heavy and there’s some humor as well. I give this book extra bonus points because Philyaw is a Jax,FL native and we graduated from the same high school.

Keana PattersonI started this book at 4:30 am and did not put it down until I was done 2 hours later. This book had me HOOKED from the beginning. The real hero of this story is Ben though, because Mallory was so stubborn, I would've left her. I was absolutely NOT expecting that twist at the end. It was a peculiar twist but I loved it. This is my first 5 star read of the year and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves thrillers. It was recommended to me as a horror novel but I felt it was moreso a thriller.

Keana PattersonFalling is an incredible thriller that kept me on my toes from the start to the end. T.J. Newman’s debut novel is definitely a hit. I heard some “galley gossip” that there will also be a movie. If that is indeed fact, I can’t wait to see the movie as well!

Usually I do pros and cons for book reviews but I hardly have any cons. I will say the conversations between Bill and Ben, the First Officer, at the end were a bit trite but honestly pilots say a lot of corny things in real life so I wasn’t too mad at it. There is some crude language and violence. It doesn’t bother me but it is something for the more sensitive or cautious reader to be mindful of.

On to the good stuff! I loved how the FAs were sassy even in the event of an emergency, she definitely got that detail right. I’ve flown with a few “Big Daddy’s” and have also been the Kelli, getting called on reserve to work the flight seemingly from hell. I also adored Jo, the senior mama who sometimes feels like your actual mama. I particularly enjoyed the pacing of the story. It wasn’t too fast or too slow for me. The plot made me think about how citizens in first world countries are privileged enough to just ignore the tragedies that happen in other countries and go about our lives without second thought. As someone who travels frequently, I do take notice of my own privilege when outside of the U.S. Collectively, we do tend to think the world revolves around us. Let me tell yall, this particular situation was definitely not covered in my FA training but the entire crew, well almost, were smart in handling this horror.

Honestly, I’ve been raving about this book with all my crews this past week. I’d shove it in their hands and lock them in the lavs until they finished it if I could, okay maybe that’s a bit much. Congratulations to TJ on publishing your first novel and I can’t wait to read more from her! This is a well written thriller/suspense that will keep you at the edge of your seat for sure.
