Liz ThurmanAlthough I’ve gotten pretty burned out on everything having to be a trilogy or a series lately, I’m here for this one! It’s like an African HP & TDH. There’s magi, there’s the African version of muggles, there’s war, there’s death and even a dash of romance. I can’t wait for book 2.
Liz ThurmanNot your typical YA dystopian novel, adult themes and plenty of gory death battle scenes to keep the story moving. Although I don't know why all these types of novels have to be trilogies now, but this one I'll take.
Liz ThurmanTo my book loving pals who recommended this book...BABYYYY, this bad boy did not disappoint! Addie Severson is a troubled high school junior, returning to Caseham High after being at the center of scandal last year. She has become the school pariah with both students and teachers, especially Even Bennett her math teacher. But Eve's husband Nate, also a teacher at Caseham thinks Addie needs compassion and encouragement. Eve warns Nate to be careful of Addie, but is Nate really in danger with Addie? Or is Eve?

While the subject matter might be triggering for some on several fronts (**spoiler alert** bullying, child abuse, domestic violence), the story is paced well and keeps your interest, even with such predictable topics. It has just enough suspense to keep you guess and when you get not one, not two but three plot twists at the end??? Ms. McFadden has garnered a new fan in me! I'm ready to read some of her other books now, I hope they are just as compelling!
Liz ThurmanLyrical, evocative, an exploration in family relationships, class and sexuality.
Liz ThurmanIt's a lot of characters to keep up with, even though at the end you see the connectedness of them all. Like the different voices telling the story.
