MarleneI didn’t expect myself to enjoy this book as much as I did. I loved the enemies to lovers aspect, even if the relationship did seem a little rushed and out of the blue. The only reason I rate it a bit lower is because I didn’t agree with some of the takes on feminism and I found it made the book less enjoyable. But still, a fun concept and I definitely think this book deserves a read!
MarleneWords cannot describe how much I loved this book. It took some time for me to really ease into the story, I only began feeling less like a chore to read around page 50. The flipping between timelines caught me off guard but I got used to it and it became a lot easier to understand towards the middle. The story was beautiful, tackling themes of drug abuse, grief, loss, forgiving yourself. I don’t regret taking a chance on this book. Check other reviews for a more in depth analysis, because this isn’t it. I just wanted to share my thoughts after just reading the last page. Definitely not a lighthearted and fluffy romance if that’s what you were looking for. I was more invested of the friendships, especially the one between David and Phoebe. Both characters were incredibly flawed but that’s what made them feel more human to me. I wish I could get another book from David’s perspective so I could understand him better. I guess the whole point was that Phoebe didn’t know what was going on, only what she had seen on the surface and what everyone knew. Final thoughts: just wow…
MarleneHelped me get out of a reading block. The characters were fun and genuinely likable, I found myself rooting for everyone (except Will. Once you read the book, you’ll know why) With most books of this genre you often find that authors would try too hard to make characters relatable and end up making uncomfortable and cringey dialogue, but I felt none of that. This book got a lot of laughs out of me. The ending left a lot to be desired, but it was satisfactory. It kind of leaves you wondering “what happened afterwards?”, so if you don’t like that kind of thing, maybe it’s not a book for you.
MarleneThis book was beautifully written and never lost my interest. I picked it up at a local bookstore, not expecting much and briefly skimming over the synopsis. This is a definite must read and eye opening, especially for a westerner such as myself who wasn’t aware of the Hong Kong protests of 2019-20. I would read this a million times over again.
MarleneIt was an easy, quick read. The dynamic between the main character and the mother was fun to see! The romance parts of the story were a little lackluster, both relationships felt a little rushed. The plot was something new, therefore made the book worth the read. Overall a 3/5 as it didn’t stand out much to me.
