MaryBeth3.5⭐️ Not the worst book I’ve read but definitely did not hit for me. My unpopular opinion is this book is not my favorite. The plot is supposed to be all about friendship yet neither one really knew that much about each other. The male and female main character cannot communicate effectively with each other and are constantly at odds with each other throughout the story. Each of them tries to come across as always putting the other first but in the end seem to care more about themselves. On the surface it may seem like they deeply care for each other but they also seem to always have an underlying self-serving reason for each action. The authors writing and style constantly changes throughout the book and large sections seem to drag on. I get the thought process and I don’t mind changing techniques, but each section seemed to change. There was no consistency. I felt she thought “how many writing styles can I jam into one book?” And did just that. The word usage is pretentious and pedantic. I have a decent lexicon and I even struggled to keep up at times. (See I can use big words too). I read another review that the book was too long. I can’t necessarily disagree. It seems page length is about high end of average, it just felt so much longer. It was easy to just want to walk away from and many times I felt like DNF’ing the book but kept holding out hope. I tried looking for that moment that everyone who posted reviews said it was amazing and wonderful, but I just didn’t see it.
MaryBethWow I’m so torn on this! I was going to go like 3.5 but the ending totally turned it around and made it a solid 4. Was is a little cheesy, yeah but it’s also part romance so you get what you get. I don’t normally like paranormal stories, let alone paranomal romantasy style books but this was “lite” version of you will. I had such a love hate relationship with the book. I wasn’t sure I liked it at all, but the last 1/3 of the book really got me. I kind of pegged the ending as well and loved the way it turned out.
MaryBethI wanted to sit on this for a minute. Originally I thought I needed to give it 4.5 stars but I think 4 is good. I liked Nesta’s character, the thought behind the story, the basic plot, BUT…..I think this all could have been conveyed in about 100-200 less pages. I thought the way Nesta’s transformation took place in stages was perfect for the story because her character was built to be stubborn and an instant change wouldn’t have worked. I needed less of the daily schedule. I know the picture was trying to be painted, but it could be redundant. I liked the build up of her and Cassin’s romance but could have done with a little less than the every night play by play we were getting towards the end. I think the slow build was good for the story again. I think the way Maas laid out everything was perfect but some of it dragged a little. I also cried at the ending. That ending alone, maybe even the last 50 pages, 5/5 stars. It was perfect! It was the full transformation you wanted for Nesta all along. The thought and underlying message that no matter what, blood is thicker than water, your family is your family. I am so sad to have finished the series because I loved being in this little fantasy world. I only hope that book 6 and maybe 7 don’t take too long!
MaryBeth3.75 almost so close to a 4. It was a little cringy and Wyatt came off as a “duuuude” blonde airhead type to me the way he always was like “Babe!” I usually like the situation-ship, enemies to lovers, marriage of convenience trope but this one just didn’t really do it. I ended up skipping over sections to just try and get to the end. I totally knew that Wallace would show up with Cadance and ruin everything as well. That was a given. I felt the book could have been at least 100 pages shorter and still conveyed the same message. I love Meghan Quinn but this one was really farther fetched and a little more cringy than others I’ve read.
MaryBeth4.5⭐️. I really enjoyed the pace of this book much more compared to the first one. The first book set this one up very well and was a lot of action all the time. I really liked the characters and was rooting for Winnow and Kitt throughout the story. The plot kept me constantly engaged and where you may have know where the story was headed the way you got there wasn’t always what you expected which was good. You could also feel the intensity in some of the scenes, especially the car chase/hounds scene. Great duology!
MaryBethNo rating on the actual content because I don’t feel right about rating someone’s life story. It was raw, emotional, traumatic and my heart aches for what she went through. Yet it was also powerful and incredibly brave. However, 5⭐️ for the style of writing. I loved the short chapters, the rawness of the writing and all done so in a way that kept you captivated and wanting you to read more. Jennette has a talent for telling a story and I hope she continues to write because this book was done very well.
MaryBeth3.5⭐️ The book was good but maybe because I read Dark Angel first I forgot this was book number 1. The beginning was a little slower because this is the first book of the series so we get a little more in depth background on Letty as she only makes brief appearances or mentions in all the other novels. It is a typical Sanford novel and maybe I just wasn’t in the mood or maybe it was the basis of the plot line I’m not sure. It wasn’t a bad read but it’s ok.
MaryBethI want to go with 3.5-3.75 ⭐️ I definitely think this book has a purpose and is needed in the series but it’s not as captivating or action packed as the other 3. Due to the lower key nature of the book and bridging the gap between the 3 and 4 I believe is why I think the overall rating is lower than the other books. The writing is consistent. The multiple view points are ok but oddly done because they aren’t technically their views and thoughts more so what’s going on with them.
MaryBethThis book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I couldn’t put it down and the emotions I felt… I don’t think I’ve had a book get me like that in a long time.
