Paul GarciaThe culture wars of the past reflect what we are witnessing today. The title says a whole lot. The stories, both fiction and historical fiction (there are two alternating but connected stories), explore themes of misogyny, imperialism, religious fanaticism, genocide, paternalism, and the consequences of self- righteousness and self-appointed missions to meddle in the lives of others in the name of salvation. Obsession destroyed Ahab, driving him insane and ultimately to his doom. In this way, Friar Diego and Cortez follow the same trajectory as they obsessively pursue their misguided and selfish hunts for their white whales, deluding themselves and excusing their own "sins" as God's work.
Paul GarciaI was consumed by this book, enraptured by the characters and plot, and swept up in the Chilean historical setting. This is one of those books in which the ending left me completely satisfied.
Paul Garcia4.5 Rounded up.
This book has a lot going on - in a good way.
Moving story, detailing the lives of a young pirate and beekeeper over decades. Engaging and the twists and turns not always predictable.
Paul GarciaWow, though I read through translation, the writing was strong and moving. The story left me with lots to think and feel about.
