SarahAngels in the Moonlight by Caimh McDonnell 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I'm starting this series chronologically and I gotta say that Bunny is a strong character and it's been a riot. I got very much lethal weapon vibes in Dublin and I really enjoyed the audiobook putting on the different accents though I myself wouldn't know if they were accurate. The only reason it's wasn't five stars was because of the audiobook though, not knowing the accents well, Bunny's chosen voice seemed much older than 30's and I had a hard time picturing the guy being younger than 50, which made things in my minds eye a jumble everytime he spoke. That's a me problem I know but what can you do. The humor and the fast pace toward the end kept this going a quick pace and I'm excited for the next one to see how Bunny makes a comeback. I might just ebook this next one though...
SarahCity of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett 1/5 ⭐ DNF at Ch 7. 30% I just wasn't feeling this one, I was kinda bored and there's a lot of description but it doesn't feel like it's saying anything, like a talking head. Character wise I liked Sigrud and Mulaghesh but not enough to keep reading. The plot is a little heavy handed and also roundabout. I picked it back up where I left off... Further thoughts! Alright! I finished and I still like Sigrud and Mulagesh as my favorite characters but it's nice that the main MC grew such a backbone! My favorite part was midbook with the lake and the warehouse but I can't say I wasn't annoyed at how the warehouse ended up.
SarahComanche Moon by Larry McMurtry 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ There was a lot about this I loved! While Texas in this didn't feel like the massive presence I came to know (almost a character in it's own right) like Mexico did in the first book (Dead Man's Walk) I fell in love with one mans education in a crowd of ignorant men. Captain Scull, and his quest for the next thing and his tenacity to survive for a big chunk of the book was heart wenching, and horrifying but part three arrives and he almost fully disappears! You get two chapters on him and while it is a little closure it feels a little on the open interpretation side of things. The town of Austin feels like it fleshes out really good (but through the whole thing seems much smaller than it out to be) after a disaster and you get your first experience at Lonesome Dove which after, is mentioned by our MC's for possibilities with their future moving forward. The natives are mostly just smaller starving bands of resistance and they all see the writing on the wall, some chosing just to give up and join in the white settlements and others just outright choosing to die their own way. I kinda wish we had gotten a perspective of one of the bands that had decided to settle. We hear and learn so little of that time in history from that perspective. The Civil War begins and ends during this with a good gap of the whole ordeal which I was hoping to follow someone through but it makes since that you don't. The women folk in this was the most disappointing of all. Everyone was heartbreaking and just utterly horrible! The things these women had to endure make me think Larry McMurtry didn't like women or had a massive grudge. But it also kinda makes since in a time that was wholely different than our own and before the woman's rights movement. I'm leaving this one a little sad but also ready to get to the meat and potatoes of the Lonesome Dove series book three Lonesome Dove itself is next.
SarahTraitor's Blade by Sebastian De Castell 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This was amazing! I cheered, laughed, almost cried (which is a feat to itself) and thoroughly enjoyed myself! I loved most of the characters, there was about a 3 chapter span mid book that I could've done without and I'm told that is a turning point for most readers but I feel even that is eventually set to rights and made up for! This a very much a top tier series for me just with book 1, can't wait to follow it up!
SarahThe Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I really liked this, a mix of the anime Kamisama Kiss and the Studio Ghibli film Spirited Away this was right up my alley! An easy read and very enjoyable but the hidden relationships of this story were a bit transparent but still very much enjoyable. I hope there is a continuation of the other characters someday. I'll be there to read it.
SarahDaindreth's Assassin by Elisabeth Wheatley 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Assassins, princes, curses, demons and magic. I liked a lot about this, it wasn't instant love but started with curiosity and then lust and on from there. The Prince wasn't the most handsome person in the world from the get go but became more handsome to the MC as she got to know him, and while a part of it felt rushed at a certain point, it slowed back down when you needed it to. I also liked some of the back track to the Princes perspective earlier in the book but that was a little too long I think. I'll probably read the next book in the series.
SarahDogs of War by Adrian Tchaikovsky 3/5 ⭐⭐⭐ This is tough. Is Rex a good dog, can you become a good dog after the worst happens? Is following orders a good excuse for evil deeds when it's all you've ever known and can you be redeemed? Is technological advances such as these the future and do we want them? Do we have a choice? This book asked a lot of questions and I'm not sure they were all answered.
SarahMaskerade by Terry Pratchett 3/5 ⭐⭐⭐ This one felt like a building book. The pair Ogg and Weatherwax looking for a third witch. Ogg being her pleasant self unless she's stuck under Weatherwax's thumb and Weatherwax acting and being the superior witch the whole time with Greebo in tow. The Phantom of the Opera bit was okay and I look forward to Nitt's progress in the next book. I was sad for her though, such blatant disregard for a person is so rude.
SarahBookshops and Bonedust by Travis Baldree 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ This was fun, there's something about talking animals living like humans and Orcs, Dwarves, Necromancers and living skeletons that I'm just drawn to. I'm reading these in order so I can't wait for Legends and Latte's now with this storyline in the background of my mind.
SarahI Leave it Up to You by Jinwoo Chong 3/5 ⭐⭐⭐ This was different. It was interesting thinking about someone going through all of COVID in a coma and trying to figure out the world after. Rebuilding their life and coming back to family and a family business they thought was closed to them.
