"4.5⭐️ I will watch anything Ted Danson and this lovable show does not disappoint! Yes it’s cute and quirky but also touching and insightful with the right balance of emotional depth and light humor.
I once worked at an upscale retirement community much like the one depicted (actually in Oakland!) and I can say .. it got so much right lol. All the drama, “sexual rivals” (🤣), arguments about salt. The residents exactly like super grumpy Susan all the way to sweet, wise Flo .. to uncovering the mystery of who was coming into my office stealthily stealing things off my desk when I wasn’t in, and my favorite who once squished my face between his hands to say “you’re one of the good ones.”🥺 And then the reality of arriving any given morning only to burst into tears learning of the loss of someone you just had a conversation with the day before.
Somehow this show handles the difficult topics of aging, loss and end of life without being depressing or maudlin, more than that it manages a feel-good tone perfect for lifting the spirit and instilling some much needed optimism, yet in a realistic way. Plus some wonderful actors from my youth (loved seeing Sally Struthers!), and the expansive, fairly breathtaking shots of SF, add to the joy of this quick binge.
Also if you think you’re too young for this show.. you’re not. Trust me ☺️"
"To set expectations, this is fun, thoughtful, and heartwarming but never LOL. I really like Danson, but I am used to laughing out loud when watching him so I was a bit disappointed that you don’t get that here. That said, it’s still a good show that I enjoyed all the way and I expect most people will be very glad they watched it"
" FREAKING. ADORABLE. Honestly it seems pretty hard to go wrong with a project Michael Shur (The Office, Parks and Rec, The Good Place, Brooklyn 99, SNL, etc) is involved in. Then add in Ted Danson (Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Good Place), Mary Elizabeth Ellis (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), and Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn 99, Modern Family) as your leads, you likely have gold on your hands. In this case, this is absolutely true. Ted Danson is a super sweet retired engineering professor and recent widower who, in search of a project, responds to a private investigator’s ad looking for an elderly person willing to go undercover in a retirement home. The comedy is on point, but if you are a known movie cryer I’d keep something handy lol, it will hit home for a lot of people. I just love this so much, and it’s a truly welcome escape from the horror show that is our currently reality in this country. I reeeaaally needed this. Do yourselves a favor and binge this small 8 episode package of Netflix happy cuteness asap 💖🥹🥹🥹"
"A really endearing and heartfelt comedy with a lovable Ted Danson. Shines light on the social, societal, and medical care that seniors typically receive (or lack thereof). It balances light humor with real themes of life, death, love, and family. I really liked it's depiction and hope there's another season, but this season was totally satisfying and felt like a passion project from the creators. More comedy than mystery but mystery does serve a more minor role here."
