In the last years of Victoria's reign, London is beset by the "Touched": people — mostly women — who suddenly manifest abnormal abilities, some charming, some very disturbing. Among them are Amalia True, a mysterious, quick-fisted widow, and Penance Adair, a brilliant young inventor. They are the champions of this new underclass, making a home for the Touched, while fighting the forces of… well, pretty much all the forces — to make room for those whom history as we know it has no place.

"My issue with Joss Whedon is that he has to shove at least three genres together. After I mourned the belief that I'd been joyously watching a show about magic people, and got over the fact that I'd have to watch something about alien wars, I put on my big girl pants and settled back in. Boy was I glad I did. No I'm asking, was I? I really liked this show but the ending devastated me. I lie awake at night, gaze off in the middle of washing up or hanging my clothes, and I wonder which one of them was right. Maybe I'm in denial at having my faith shattered. I hope they make a second season so I can find out."
