Bryce Courtenay
In 1939, hatred took root in South Africa, where the seeds of apartheid were newly sown. There a boy called Peekay was born. He spoke the wrong language–English. He was nursed by a woman of the wrong color–black. His childhood was marked by humiliation and abandonment. Yet he vowed to survive–he would become welterweight champion of the world, he would dream heroic dreams. But his dreams were nothing compared to what awaited him. For he embarked on an epic journey, where he would learn the power of words, the power to transform lives, and the mystical power that would sustain him even when it appeared that villainy would rule the world: The Power of One.

"I would have to say that this is one of the best books I have ever read and it made me a big fan of Courtenay's.<br/>It's the story of Peekay, a young English boy, growing up in South Africa, during WWII. The reader is taken inside Peekay's world and how he deals with racism, growing up and fighting for his dreams. I laughed, cried and smiled through the whole book."

"One of my favorite books that I’ve ever read. I read it in a high school English class over 6 years ago and still would recommend it to anyone!"

"My uncle recommended it to me and told me it was moving and powerful. It was definitely those things but it was also really long and I just didn’t find it that interesting. It’s beautifully written and very poetic and it’s definitely a very good book, just not personally my cup of tea.

"This book is as extraordinary in the beginning as it is powerful in the end. Courtenay wrote in a way that hooked me into continuing each sentence with hunger to read more. This book is very recommended if you want to discovery a great story during the times of WWII. "
