People died because he lived.Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people. Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the sultan. If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected; if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways. Both Zafira and Nasir are legends in the kingdom of Arawiya—but neither wants to be.War is brewing, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow. When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the sultan on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter. But an ancient evil stirs as their journey unfolds—and the prize they seek may pose a threat greater than either can imagine.

"I found this to be an enjoyable if not a somewhat unmemorable YA adventure. I thought the writing style was lovely but the story relied heavily on cliches making it feel more like a long fairy tale and less like a novel. The characters were all very engaging nonetheless and I look forward to reading the next booK"
"this book was a breath of fresh air! another eastern mythology I absolute adored. I love feeling seen and represented and both these books had bits and pieces in them that I adore. I love Zafira and Nasir and his brother who’s name I’m blanking on right now. This story was personally very refreshing in the world of English written fantasy and I look forward to reading book 2."
"Holy crap was this book good! The characters were rich and intricate, the setting was beautiful, and the plot was full of adventure!

Reread update: YEAH THIS WAS SO AMAZING! I really adore this story and cannot wait to read the sequel!"

"5/5 😍😍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 At the beginning of the book I was like hmm this is a lot, there is a lot of information and I wanted to make sure I gleaned it all to really enjoy this book… as the book went on i fell in love with each and every character. I also LOVED the frequent use of Arabic words throughout. This book was captivating and the character development with Nasir was amazing. There is soo much room for imagination while reading this, so much magic 😍. the author has a BEAUTIFUL way of writing. Altair was so refreshing and I loved everything about Zafira . Read this book. I am so ready to read the next one :) "
