Gatsby-era glamour, a swoon-worthy love story, and an indomitable heroine dazzle in this romp that captures the extravagance of the Roaring Twenties and the dangers of vigilante justice.A ravishing young mind reader stalks the streets at night in kitten heels, prowling for men to murder. A soft-spoken genius toils away in the city morgue, desperate to unearth the science behind his gift for shapeshifting. It’s a match made in 1928 Chicago, where gangsters run City Hall, jazz fills the air, and every good girl’s purse conceals a flask. Until now, eighteen-year-old Ruby’s penchant for poison has been a secret. No one knows that she uses her mind-reading abilities to target men who prey on vulnerable women, men who escape the clutches of Chicago “justice.” When she meets a brilliant boy working at the morgue, his knack for forensic detail threatens to uncover her dark hobby. Even more unfortunately: sharp, independent Ruby has fallen in love with him.Waltzing between a supernaturally enhanced romance, the battle to take down a gentleman’s club, and loyal friendships worth their weight in diamonds, Ruby brings defiant charm to every page of Murder for the Modern Girl—not to mention killer fashion. An irresistible caper perfect for fans of The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, in an exquisite hardcover package with rose-gold foil.A Junior Library Guild Gold Standard SelectionNamed to the Pennsylvania Young Readers Choice List

"The writing in this was awful and the plot made no sense but I finished it so there’s that

I wrote that ^^^ at 1 am last night but I have thoughts; spoilers might follow but this book is t worth reading so who cares.

okay so first of all, this book has magic in it, the mc can read minds and the love interest can change his face, but we’re never given any explanation for how or why they have these magical abilities, we’re just kinda told that they can do these things and are expected to just accept it. Another thing is we have no backstory on Ruby and her knowing how to murder several men, I didn’t even realize she was a LITERAL SERIAL KILLER until 100 pages in! Like, I’m sorry, tbis 18 year old MURDERED a dozen full grown men and we hear nothing about it???? OKAY????

also, wtf was up with guy/Peter??? Like we hear about how he was involved in a train wreck, but you only find out that three people were killed like, 20 pages from the end. The whole time I thought it was just his dad who dies but nope, he was responsible for three peoples deaths! Yay! I feel like the author was trying to give him an angsty, mysterious past but like… did it very poorly.

This book is set in the 20’s but it was so annoying, please tell me no one actually said “posi-tute-ly” like I did not appreciate the “roaring 20’s vibes” but maybe that’s just a taste thing.

ALSO this plot was all over the place, like there’s no lead up to anything suddenly we’re just involved in some corrupt government human trafficking ring??? BUT WHAT ABOUT THE MOB BOSS WHERE DID HE COME IN???

I might be generous with 2 stars but I didn’t dnf so I felt like that deserved an extra star but this book was trash, don’t bother reading it

EDIT: HOW DOES THIS BOOK HAVE SO MANY 4 STAR REVIEWS"
