Chelsea G. Summers
One of Vanity Fair's Books That Will Get You Through This Winter "One of the most uniquely fun and campily gory books in my recent memory... A Certain Hunger has the voice of a hard-boiled detective novel, as if metaphor-happy Raymond Chandler handed the reins over to the sexed-up femme fatale and really let her fly." --The New York Times Food critic Dorothy Daniels loves what she does. Discerning, meticulous, and very, very smart, Dorothy's clear mastery of the culinary arts make it likely that she could, on any given night, whip up a more inspired dish than any one of the chefs she writes about. Dorothy loves sex as much as she loves food, and while she has struggled to find a long-term partner that can keep up with her, she makes the best of her single life, frequently traveling from Manhattan to Italy for a taste of both. But there is something within Dorothy that's different from everyone else, and having suppressed it long enough, she starts to embrace what makes Dorothy uniquely, terrifyingly herself. Recounting her life from a seemingly idyllic farm-to-table childhood, the heights of her career, to the moment she plunges an ice pick into a man's neck on Fire Island, Dorothy Daniels show us what happens when a woman finally embraces her superiority. A satire of early foodieism, a critique of how gender is defined, and a showcase of virtuoso storytelling, Chelsea G. Summers' A Certain Hunger introduces us to the food world's most charming psychopath and an exciting new voice in fiction.

"This BOOK! Deliciously, dastardly, delightful! It's so gory and so beautiful. An unredeemable narrator that you just can't help but love for the way she challenges you to think! So much goodness! "

"I had my issues with this book but my my is it quite the read. The narration is very lascivious and relentless in its graphic depictions of slaughter so it is not a light read but overall I found it interesting. Also she speaks like a thesaurus but it did broaden my vocabulary so! "

"I read quite a bit of horror, but this is the first book to make me recoil and have to stop reading. I won’t spoil it, but this is true horror. A true psychopath killer. It is unfathomable that this is Summers’ first book. "

"My feelings about this book are conflicted. It was disgusting, in many ways, from beginning to end, but I couldn't stop reading. I am puzzled as to why it was so fascinating to be inside of the mind of a psychopath. It was interesting to see a personality so sure of herself, someone who didn't have all those little worries to stop her. This book, made me want to care a little less, and work a little more. I loved the letter at the end. For a story where we know the ending from the very beginning the plot twist was exciting."

"The book started off kind of slow and confusing in the beginning, but 3/4 in to the end was great! Was quite sexual and gory but also filled with great vocabulary. I loved the way she wrote and went into detail, it really made you think, especially since it’s her first novel."
