"Dark, violent, ambiguous, intriguing. I’m not sure what to think, but I like that it makes me think - about Canadian and American identity, about resource scarcity, about war, about terrorism. I wish the ending was a bit clearer and I don’t really get the point of the final flashback. It’s critical to recognize this book was published in 2016 - pre-Trump, pre-“freedom convoy”, before the alt-right began to become mainstream. So the freedom fighters in this book need to be read in that context. I enjoyed the Quebecois character and the French. It’s sort of subversive to have a book with this topic written in such a way that most Americans would have trouble following a whole character and yet most anglo Canadians will have enough basic French to follow everything."
