The Jane Austen Project - Likewise Book Reviews

"So I first came across this book in an article featuring novels being released this year that feature Jane Austen or her work, since 2017 commemorates the 200th anniversary of her death. I was intrigued since I love Jane Austen and historical fiction in general, and I thought it would be a fun read. What I found instead was an incredibly nuanced story that resonated with me in so many ways, and breathes to life a author so revered as to be more monument than woman. It is meticulously researched, but more so it takes away the glowy shine we have about Jane Austen and makes her human again. The dialogue was so realistic and sincere, and I felt a human connection through this book that I think gets lost today when we talk about great authors.

But while I came for Jane, I really fell in love with the two time travelers themselves. This story emotionally gutted me at points, and I felt such a deep connection to Rachel, our narrator. She’s not perfect and she makes a lot of mistakes, but she’s human and that ultimately is what makes this book so fantastic. It’s a surreal and impossible situation the two main characters find themselves in, but somehow it’s so easy to understand why they do what they do.

I loved every part of it, and it may be one of my favorite books from this year. Of course, I love it because it is a combination of nearly everything I love in novels and I seriously can’t imagine a book based on premise alone I would love more, but I hope others are encouraged to check this out!"
